Who would've thought that a game filled with rappers would turn out to be one of the best fighting games for the PS2?

User Rating: 9 | Def Jam: Fight for NY PS2
After the success of Def Jam: Vendetta back in 2003, EA Sports and AKI went at it again in 2004 to deliver the sequel Fight For New York and I must say, they did a spectacular job doing so.

Over 70 famous names from Method Man, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg and etc. await you in this hard hitting, fast-paced, arcade style, part-fighting and part-wrestling game. The one thing that kinda differentiates from Vendetta? While Vendetta felt more like a wrestling game, Fight For New York feels like an all-out street fight with victory only being obtained by submission or knockout, mostly knockout.

Def Jam: Fight For New York also equips fighters with 2 out of 5 unique fighting styles to make them into more formidable opponents: Wrestling, Streetfighting, Kickboxing, Martial Arts and Submission. Created fighters can have up to 3 which in a way gives them a bit of an advantage over everyone else.

Much like the first Def Jam game, it has a story mode which is so limited to your created fighter. Yes, create-a-fighter and work your way through the ranks to be one of the best fighters in the Def Jam league. The story though is a direct follow-up to Vendetta with D-Mob being escorted to prison when an unknown assailant (your fighter) helps him escape and now you're apart of his family. S'up to you to play the game to see what goes on from there.

All in all, I consider Def Jam: Fight For New York to be one of the best fighting games to be released for the PS2. Also the fact that AKI, the same company that gave us classic wrestling titles such as WCW/nWo Revenge, makes it even better cause just about anyone could easily get into the game. So, if you like wrestling games, fighting games, or just iconic names of the hip-hop community, then look no further than Def Jam: Fight For New York.
