A highly recommended hunting game that does everything right!
Now I can say that has all changed with Deer Hunter Tournament. In this game you can now play online in hunting tournaments with other hunters. This is a first for a hunting game. I found that the animal AI in single player is real challenging for practice. In fact it's down right realistic! You can't just walk up on a animal and expect to shoot it from point blank range. There are many variables to worry about such as wind direction. If you are standing up wind from your prey they will smell you and avoid heading in your direction. Also, the animals have real bahaviors such as sitting up-right or hinding brush. It's all amazing.....
Deer Hunter is a wonderful game where you can hunt from Alaska to Finland, from Maine to Mexico, ect. and the maps are large enough to get lost in. The scenery can be breathtaking at times. If you have a decent machine to run it you will be amazed at the graphics. Basically you set up a single player or online tournament hunt. You can even target practice beforehand to try out different weapons. You can hunt different species of animals such as moose, elk, bear, mountian lion, numerous species of deer, turkey, etc. Watch out for predators. They will attack you if you get too close.
You can also select sex of the hunter, clothing to wear, two weapons to use and extra gear. The gear consists of gun scopes, optics, animal scents, etc. to help you track and kill your prey. You can even use Thermal Binoculars that will help you spot animals at long ranges.
The graphics in the game can be taxing on older/slower PC's so make sure you can run it first before buying. The terrian scenery will not look as good on lower graphic settings. Weather include everthing from falling snow in Finland to rain showers and thunder storms with lightning. There is no night hunting in this game but you can hunt at dawn, morning, noon and afternoon.
The game sounds are wonderful especially the ambient wildlife sounds. If you view the wildlife viewer you can often hear sounds animals make! I would advise checking this out so you can look at different animals to see their real behaviors. You can't ask for more from a low budget hunting game. In closing, Deer Hunter Tournament is a breath of fresh air in a stale genre. For the first time you can go online to play in tournaments against other hunters. Tournaments allow you to win points by killing the first animal, the largest trophy or the largest rack. If you haven't played a hunting game in awhile now is the time to do so.
