A good, hardly played gem...

User Rating: 7.1 | Death Race NES
Death Race was one of my favorite rentals when I was a kid. Rental, because I never could buy it since it was hard for me to get Nintendo games. I never saw the box, but the sticker on the cartridge called my attention (that and Hello!! it's called Death Race!!). We soon opened the lid on our NES (me and my brother) and after blowing the cartridge and inserting it, we started blasting zombies and monsters into oblivion.

The game consisted about you, driving your car around and killing zombies. That was basically it. You could play two player coop which I loved. There's nothing like blasting zombies or any kind of monster together with a friend (see Contra). You got money and with it you could upgrade your cars with better weapons I had never seen that before in a game for the NES. For the first time, I didn't have to use one kind of weapon, or both players had to use the same thing. Strategies were born. Alas, we never got pass stage 2.

The controls were somewhat responsive but it was hard to evade the enemy bullets most of the time. That was what made the game difficult to begin with.

The graphics were pretty standard. Nothing to be amazed about. The sounds and music followed it's steps (the graphics).

This game wasn't eye candy, just game play. A little hard, but you got addicted after some time. This made it easier to come back one time after the other to try and pass stage 2. With all of those new games coming out now, it's good to remember that games only need good game play to be awesome.
