This is some bad reviewing. I understand that the review and the score is your personal opinion and that is fine but you give no real insight on how the combat works, some people may not even know that there are two ways to fight in melee style - analog and digital.

Even if the game is bad in your opinion then that is not an excuse to do such a sluggish review.

I knew this was gonna suck, I have the first one, it's one of the most boring games I've ever played. It took a lot just to finish it, now it sits never to be played again.

this game looks unpolished, ugly, and boring. sucks cuz you figure a game based around melee combat should be tense and fun...but it's not. save yourself the money for something better i say..

a review is a reviewers point of perspective on a game, and that i all.

maybe there shoud have been another reviewer on thes game, but it is not a "bad" review.

Atheosis
Atheosis

I love it.  Finally reviewers are ripping the garbage that is Dead Island.

almightyfargoth
almightyfargoth

@Atheosis and yet, based on the comments section (if you actually had the common sense to bother reading through it :P) the majority of players really like it and bashed the "review" of it to hell based on the fact the "reviewer" barely knows what he's talking about and plays the game like a complete noob.

like seriously, the guy complains about combat and is using very basic, weak, and non-modded weapons throughout and then doesn't even use any skill other than standing there swiping back and forth. There's a lot more to the combat than just slapping a weapon around, especially with the combat perks for John in the game.

so basically, the reviewer definitely doesn't know what he's talking about, and what you "love" is an inability to know a damn thing about Dead Island Riptide and then formulate a pathetic video and have the nerve to label it a review. Also, this guy is one single person, he's not "reviewers" plural.

most gaming sites have given it a 7/10 or a 6/10 also, so per usual with your statements you don't know what you're talking about :P

Atheosis
Atheosis

@almightyfargoth @Atheosis I played the first one.  It was everything he just described.  Pure garbage.  Zombie fanboys just pretend it's good because it has zombies in it.

bleedgreen2-1-5
bleedgreen2-1-5

@Atheosis agreed, I have Dead Island 1 and it looks pretty identical to what I just saw in this review, boring tedious fetch quests, lack of appealing story, 2nd rate knock off special infected wannabees to Left 4 Dead, poor gunplay, seriously I aim for the head all day in mine and it never kills even the common zombie, I upgraded my weapons, built super weapons and leveled up pretty high, all in all the game is just not very good in my opinion. They advertised it as an emotionally gripping zombie game from the first trailer but besides some decent RPG elements it's a bland, mediocre and very boring game in my opinion.

almightyfargoth
almightyfargoth

@Atheosis @almightyfargoth No, I'm a fan of having a coherent point or valid facts behind one's statements.

I definitely care about that :P

Something you haven't done once, just slinging fanboy labels around like a donk.

Not to mention, you didn't address a single thing I said. No surprise there, because again...you're a donk.

almightyfargoth
almightyfargoth

@Atheosis Again, what an apt analysis :P

"Garbage", "garbage", "just pretend it's good because it has zombies in it"

You aren't winning any awards for maturity, nor are you even basing what you're saying on solid ground. You're the fanboy here, an anti-fanboy as it were. You don't even bring up logical things to bash the game with, and then when confronted you just restate the same statements ad nauseum.

Also, who just described? The donk reviewer from this video? Again, read through the comments section for people who have more than a one sentence description of the game series, as in people who played the game (s) with an objective view and then laid it down like it should be.

Like, saying "everything" is just flat retarded to begin with, but to actually believe everything he said in the video is true, even when people all over the place are slapping him upside the head for saying half of what he said, is beyond retarded.

Get a clue man, and another tune.

Also, it takes what...60 seconds to type out a few paragraphs in a string?

I honestly think the people giving this such a poor review are either terrible at games, or they're just terrible at this one.

If you know how to play this game well it is the most fun you can possibly have massacring zombies. It's much bigger than the first. Has more types of zombies. Has more weapon mods. More rewards period. And yes, if you try to engage the zombies in this morons style of combat it would be boring as ever. This game is all about being creative when dispatching your undead foes. That was the lamest combat I've ever seen in this game, he was using very weak weapons in an incredibly boring, and quite frankly noobish, style.

Also the replay value on this (at least for me) is incredibly high. There's 5 characters to get to level 70 - and at level 70 the weapons and skills are so beefed up (can't BELIEVE this guy said it hardly matters) and nearly indestructable it becomes immensely fun to get surrounded by the biggest horde of zombies you can find.

I seriously can't believe this game  gets so much hate. Yes, zip through a game as fast as possible without truly getting to know it and then give it a poor review. Brilliant.

@beer421 Some awesome points and I totally agree, it is the most fun to be had in a game in recent memory, yes its repetitive but when your repeating killing zombies with your bare hands what's not to love, would be my game of the year so far!

almightyfargoth
almightyfargoth

@beer421 Pretty good points man, I agree about taking your time with an fps with fairly open world and rpg elements mixed too. It's not nearly as linear at all as so many fps games in the last five years too.

People keep harking about fetch quests, and then relating that to it being linear. Yeah ok, well what did you really expect from a game where you collect weapons and loot? Even in Borderlands you get the same rewards basically for missions (fetch quests too :P), all the while killing enemies and getting non mission related loot along the way. Same exact shit happens in Dead Island, it's the same formula just with a different setting. If someone tells you it's not the same too, then they have no clue what they're on about/are blind to the relation between the two like crazy.

@beer421 I totally agree with you. The review was really biased to say the least. People who liked the first will like the second one for the same reasons.

I really can't play this game.

I have a big wide screen monitor and after playing 5, 10 min. my eyes and head start hurting.  I dont think it's optimised for wide screen. The screen looks somehow like a magnifying glass.

I had the same problem with the first game also and i'm really dissapointed because they didn't bother fixing it.

I can't rate this game higher than 2,5 because I CAN'T PLAY IT!

almightyfargoth
almightyfargoth like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Abanaa Um, all you have to do is physically push your monitor back further on your desk and it'll help not giving you a headache dude.

I have like a 24 inch Asus widescreen, and I have to do the same thing for a couple fps games. So yes, you totally can play it..

Abanaa
Abanaa

@almightyfargoth Thank you for your sugestion but it dosent help with the magnifying glass effect. Things are still litle distorted on the sides/edges of the screen.

It has nothing to do with the FOV. That's how the game is made, for triple monitors or something.... like 99% of gamers are gaming on triple monitors lol.

My rating stands as it is.

almightyfargoth
almightyfargoth

@Abanaa Borderlands 2 doesn't have motion blur effects though, it has clean cel shaded edges...

Abanaa
Abanaa

@almightyfargoth  I admit i'm not a big fan of first person games, but i play borderlands 2 and other shooters just fine. I just cant play this game as it is.

almightyfargoth
almightyfargoth

@Abanaa I think there's a hack you can do to the game's config file for the FOV actually, I read about it for the original game in a thread like a year ago.

Really don't think it was designed at all for dual or triple monitors man lol, might be your eyes being out of whack personally and not being able to handle it. Like a vertigo effect or some weird shit. I mean there's motion blur and then there's fuzzy textures to borders in a lot of fps games these days.

I didn't even really notice you gave it a rating before, but that's uh...not really a valid reason in my mind.

Dead Island was fun at first, for a good portion of the FIRST play through... if you have the patients. And was a bit better when you played with some friends. But once you complete it and just "wake up" on the beach again right back at the beginning, you realize that all you have to do now is EVERYTHING AGAIN. You carry over all your gear and lvls to the new Game+...but it does little to mask the disheartening realization that it is exactly the same quests and goals. And with the not truly "Open world" they provide it's hard to find fun just tooling around, especially after you've completed it.

And this dlc looks like a horrible tac-on. The redeeming factor for Dead Island was the hope of a much better cleaned up and truly open world sequel... Yet after seeing this uninspired dlc that hope is as weak as the repetitive combat; almost, but totally not.

My advice if you're still playing the campaign for the first time, or at all, just go to the ONE city section and get some friends and just play survival style. Best environment in game. And nothing beats rescuing a friend off the top of a car or building when surrounded by Zeds.

(Post Edit: Is this a full sequel!? I thought it was just dlc... if it is a full sequel then take what I said but just assume it's meant as even more disparaging, more negative points, or less positive.)

The game is poor as hell and doesn't even deserve the rating gamespot gave it imo.

Its just more of the same drivel that the original provided constant repetitiveness and poor game mechanics. It shouldnt have been a standalone release its more of a DLC and tbh after an hour of playing I think i'm done with it... Just cba to pick it back up and play ... its THAT terrible. All you do is kill the same zombies and gather loot and rinse repeat 1,000,000 times I've played better and more original browser games than this sack of crap. If your into this kinda crud then by all means carry on... but you will just be repeating the first game as they've changed nothing... not even the decals have changed everything is just the same as the first ... its like they didnt even bother to try to make it more unique or more fun they just rinse repeat the same crap over and over and over. I mean how unoriginal can you get... whatever idiot who came up with the idea should be shot "I know lets just move the entire game to another island and just pretend we've done some work these idiots wont know the difference"

If you enjoyed the original Dead Island, you will also enjoy Dead Island Riptide. The new game feels more like a beefy DLC rather than a full fledged sequel. It's an okay game :P.

Here's my review, and take on the game :)

I never played the original Dead Island but I bought this after watching Shaun and Maxwell play it on 'Now Playing'. I'm actually really enjoying it. The game definitely has its bugs and glitches but upper-cutting zombies with John "Chuck Norris" Morgan never gets old!

midnight_trashh

I disagree Mark, Deadisland, Dayz and Left4dead are the very best quality multiplayer zombie games you can play on the PC. Try your pic, because most of them are terribly developed or are just plain terrible to even play. Although you may think it's the same repetative gameplay, then you obviously wouldn't of enjoyed the original Deadisland as well.I agree Riptide isn't anything new but it certainly doesn't deserve such a low rating simply because you think it has half baked idea's. Since when has any of these Expanion packs added anything "New" to the genre anyways? None, Expansion packs are simply made too add more to the current Formula, skills, monsters, quests, new races, new characters .ect .ect

@midnight_trashh I dug out my username and password for this site to reply to you.  to your comment: yes.  thank you.  i can't believe now negative this review is.  dead island is certainly no treasure trove of gameplay experience but it is certainly a lot better than "smashing your head against a brick wall."  the reviewer is SO negative that i honestly thought he was being sarcastic for a while.  and it would seem that the reviewer has lackluster friends if he managed to have such a terrible coop experience, because that's the best part of the game.

These days it seems I have to go to the user ratings to get a good evaluation on a game because gamespot are just terrible with rating games. All three platforms are around a 7 so I take that score... the people no best not some random cynic.

@EL_Bomberdor i've always been the type to find the best in games and try to focus on those parts.  that being said, dead island certainly has flaws and is by no means the best game i've ever played, but this review was SO negative i honestly thought mark was joking or being sarcastic at first.

This game originally on the first was supposed to pour emotion all over it with a desert of multiplayer and action.  It did have multi and action but it did not have Emotion.  They advertised this game to have it again...with emotion.  And just as I predicted, there was nothing emotional about it.  If Farcry 3 had no emotion, the score would of been just like this one, maybe a 6 honestly.  I appreciate this score, thanks for sticking it to the creator that enjoys giving the crowd a false advertisement scheme.  Maybe next time they will think of striking of what they are advertising, and not going around it.

After seeing some play through I actually started the game myself.

I like it.  It's much harder than the first game.
Yes the game is an exact replica of the 1st game.

I honestly think that the game has issues with some bugs (but its not game breaking).
But these bugs prevents you from enjoying the game.

I think if you enjoyed the 1st game I would get Rip Tide as well.
If you didn't like the 1st game, def not worth your time.

Deep Silver must be pissed after acquiring the Dead Island IP.  On the other hand, I think the game will sell pretty well because it has zombies. haha

On a serious note, we need GREAT zombie games.  Not a bunch of crappy ones, although I'm not saying Dead Island Riptide is a "bad" game.  I've never played it although I thought the first game was okay.
