Dead Head Fred is advanced in many categories, unfortunately one of them is the category of confusing.

User Rating: 8.5 | Dead Head Fred PSP
If you are on a nice family vacation and suddenly, just out of the corner of your eye, notice a haunted town where creepy characters, such as the Headless Horseman rule, then chances are you should turn back. This is because your have probably taken a wrong turn somewhere and your getting close to the world of Dead Head Fred, the M Rated game by D3 Publishers. Though it certainly isn't an incredibly scary game, it certainly won't win any popularity contests, if the judges have high blood pressure. However, aside from its freaky scenarios and a scary cast of characters, Dead Head Fred is a very clever, and visually enhanced game.

The game sets you up as a detective named Fred. Right from the start of the game you wake up and meet eye to eye with a scientist who was just barely able to save your life after you were killed, and dumped into hazardous waste, by a gang of Mafia/Mutated creatures, but you soon realize that he hasn't been able to replace your chopped off head, and instead save your brain and eyes and made them into a special jar head. However, the scientist soon realizes that this gang's main goal involves too much pollution, and therefore revives you so that you may help interrupt there plans. Also, as bad as the lack of head may sound, it does come in handing along the way.

The Game play is fun, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Sometimes you will suddenly see a rat go into a hole, for example, and without explanation you will have to follow that rat. Dead Head Fred also doesn't do a good job of telling you when you have completed your objective and where to stop, this could cost you hours of pointless boring Game play, which makes you regret purchasing the game. However, when you get around all those nooks Dead Head Fred is a solid hack and slash game. At first it may also seem way too challenging, but once you get a hand of the controls, and understand the combos, it will be very fun. It moves quickly, and almost has a free roam nature, because it's not divided into levels. However, it doesn't make sense why you are fighting all these zombies, because they don't have anything at all to do with the characters you interact with. Nevertheless, the game does throw in some good boss battles, which set you up face to face with characters who you get much background about. (Headless Horseman Included).

A first step into the game is enough to show you that the environment is nothing short of amazing, it is a detailed rich scenario filled with so many little things that add an extra kick into the game. You can see every little crack on the bricks, every branch of a the trees, making it a very eye pleasing world. Aside from the scenarios there are also great looking characters. They are also very detailed, especially when you look at the wrinkles, or damage on there clothing, or at there expression while they talk. All the heads and attires look excellent, and s do the effects. All the fire and magical attacks and what not look great, and appear smoothly in the game. Also the characters attacks and movements are done exceptionally well.

As far as the sound goes, it likes to go with the flow, of being great. There is some humorous dialog tied in with some great voices. All the voices fit the characters well, and do a great job of helping you understand who that character is, how he's feeling, and what his role is in the game. Aside from voices, Dead Head Fred also blossoms in the sound effects department. There are many things you have come to expect from an average PSP game, like fire, engines, walking and water, but there are also some blood skewing sounds that improve the game's quality greatly. All these effects and voices are done top notch to add yet another level of realism to the game.

Dead Head Fred controls great, which makes it very easy to pick up and play, and players will improve quickly, once they learn some very effective and easy to learn combos. And although it is quite repetitive as far as enemies and Game play go, Dead Head Fred is quite a clever game. The voice acting is tremendous, and D3 managed to fit some decent humor in as well. Although the graphics are top notch it would have been a lot better if the game were a bit less confusing. Nevertheless, Dead Head Fred is quite a lengthly game, and its almost free roaming nature, adds extra goodness to the game. It is a challenging game, that will certainly put you to your thinking limit, 8.8/10.
