Fast-paced, fun to play, but a little too shallow for an MMO

User Rating: 7.5 | DC Universe Online PC
I played in Beta, but decided not to purchase the retail game. Overall it was fun for a few weeks but very forgettable. A quick overview:

Pros:
-- Great textures, and nice equippable gear options
-- Borrows some of the best game mechanics from its predecessors (esp. Champions)
-- Plays much more like a console fighter than any other MMO to date
-- Good integration of the DC canon, both hero and villain side
-- Characters feel "epic" right out of the gate. No rat-killing here.

Cons:
-- Not a lot of variation in the power trees. Different power sets have their own LOOK, but play very similarly.
-- Big gaps in support for standard comic book archetypes. (Superman is a fire tank!?)
-- Teaming dynamics much less strategic than other MMO's
-- Rough around the edges, lots of graphical glitches, hiccups, and crashes

There's definitely some promise here, but I don't think it's the game for me. The more action-oriented gameplay is great, but I really missed the variety of play styles across different character builds and the balanced team synergy of power sets that a game like CoX offers. I may check back in a few months to see how the game's matured, but with other titles on the horizon (SWTOR, for example) it's not a sure thing.
