E3 '07: Dave Mirra BMX Challenge Hands-On

Dave Mirra comes to the Wii in this BMX racer. We take a look.

Dave Mirra BMX Challenge was originally released on the PlayStation Portable late last year, and now publisher Crave and developer Left Field are bringing it to the Wii, complete with motion-control steering. We got to take a look at the game at E3 2007, and here's what we found.

The Wii version of BMX Challenge includes three game modes and 17 different levels/tracks to race through. The gameplay is a combination of racing and Tony Hawk-style trick action. You perform tricks to build up your Monster meter (licensed from the Monster brand of energy drink), which gives you a hefty speed boost when you fill it up. At a glance, the game looked a bit better than it did on the PSP, but in terms of basic content, it looks like it will very closely mimic its PSP counterpart.

One big change is the control scheme, which is mapped to the Wii Remote's motion-sensing technology. You hold the remote sideways as you would with something like Excite Truck. You press the 2 button to accelerate, and tilt the controller from side to side to steer. The steering certainly works, though in the build we played, it seemed a bit oversensitive, causing us to oversteer into corners and walls a little too often, even with only slight movements.

Dave Mirra BMX Challenge will hit stores for the Wii in August. Stay tuned to GameSpot for more on it soon.

I agree CAMPJILLJER, I ride BMX and Dave Mirra totally fails to capture the spirit of bmx cos it just plane sucks. The other games werre clunky and just annoying and frustrating. I'll reserve judgement on this until it out, but I have absolutely NO expectations.

ehhh, dave mirra's games aren't very good. and im a little skeptical about the controls. i think this is just gonna be another sponser-filled bmx game with clunky controls and long loading screens. anyone agree?

matt hoffman's pro bmx was pretty good IMO. hopefully this'll be just as good. although i dont like the fact that r using wut is essentially the same graphics engine as the psp version (i know that graphics dont make the game, and i believe fully on that, i just dont wanna pay more $$$ for the same game with waggle controls...but who knows)

A wii remote could be ideal for controlling a bike, as long as they get the sensitivity right. If it's too sensitive or not quite sensitive enough, it could destroy the entire experience.

The PS1 versions were good but as they havent updated the gameplay then why play was is basically a 13 year old title?

People are comparing this to the Tony Hawk games, but they don't empress me much. There were a couple great sk8 games released on the PS2 way back when, but nothing I have seen thats too special. Hopefully this game rocks though.

as a bmx rider it annoys me that dave mirra is constantly selling his name to a crap game i bought bmx xxx only because it was a bmx game and as a game it sucked big time i just wish there was a great bmx game to do justice to the sport

I used to play Dave Mirra's Freestyle BMX 2 all the time for the Xbox. I loved that game so much.

BMX games havent reli stood up 2 the Tony Hawks games .. so this one may not be that well either. personally i think u can't do as many tricks on a bike as you can on a sk8board. the racing might be nice but not enuf 2 make me buy it...

i dont understand how theyre gonna shoehorn all the tricks in with the wimote. i personally have doubts about this as a bmx game, the racing aspect makes sence, but ill have to be convinced about the tricks. i do in a way hope it does work, coz they may then consider making a bmx game for the ps3/360

I saw the demo for this, and the physics looked broken.

Sounds cool, but I've never been into the bike games, only the skate games.

Yeah, I think the controls would work out quite cool on Wii.
