"BloodRayne" meets "Halo". Gory fun.

This much hyped "Vampire Western" first-person shooter is finally out and I'm glad to say that it's a pretty good one. "Halo" it ain't, but "Darkwatch" does borrow a few things from Microsoft's masterpiece. As mute outlaw Jericho Cross, players embark on a journey in the Old West (circa 1876) to eradicate supernatural beings for Darkwatch, a secret society determined to vanquish evil from the face of the earth. Unfortunately, Cross has been bitten by a powerful vampire named Lazarus and eventually starts to gain unhuman superpowers. The type of powers you get depend on the nature of your actions. rnrnLike in "The Suffering", there are moments in the game where you must decide between two choices. One reflecting good, the other being of evil. The game's ending also depends on your decisions. Whichever path you decide to take, "Darkwatch" proves itself to be a very entertaining blast-a-thon. It's action can be rather brilliant at times such as when you whip out a crossbow and start to plug scythe-wielding skeletons with flaming arrows. Seconds after, they explode. The rag-doll physics are awesome and so is the visual presentation. Graphics are razor sharp, animation is fluid and the framerate is thankfully silky-smooth. Sound design and the musical score are also very exceptional. rnrn"Darkwatch" doesn't have a huge arsenal of weaponry, but what IS there kicks major ass. I personally love the shotgun and chucking dynamite sticks at the badguys. In addition, each weapon has its own melee attack. The segments in which you ride on your trusty steed and drive a "Halo"-esque combat jeep are fun. Also, just like in "Halo", you have are armed with a regenerative shield and battle alongside fellow A.I. controlled cowboys. Cutscenes are brief, but well done and the story itself is serviceable. rnrnOnce you finish the game, you can go back and replay levels to open up extra content. There is also a splitscreen competiton mode for up to 4 players, but unlike the XBOX version, competitive games are not offered online. However, the PS2 version of "Darkwatch" does have an exclusive splitscreen co-op mode, an exclusive level and an exclusive weapon!! So, if you're dying to play or buy an unsual, awesome FPS for the system, then "Darkwatch" maybe your game!
