Interesting article, I enjoy a decent piece of pre-rendered shenanigans, although I think given the choice i would rather pay $30 for a decent game than $60 for a decent game with a few amazing cut scenes.

Excellent video GS, Please continue to provide us with such videos.. I really enjoyed the video, as i'm reading the comments it seems most of us gamers agree and would really appreciate if u'd continue to post videos that provide us with such insight on what it is that goes into the wonderful art of video game making.

As a graphic designer, I found this video very interesting, its really cool to see how these studios work. Would love to see more videos about AI, environment creation, concept art and overall game production. Please make this a special feature every two weeks or so Gamespot.

I'd like to see a vid on the programming of AI opponents, response time to player input commands and how math figures into the equation of things like DPS, armor, upgrades, etc.

Fuck cutscenes, focus on gameplay.

TohouAsura

@Prats1993 That's not how it works...

Gameplay is the number 1 priority, if a game isn't good, it's a bad game, regardless of story. But cutscenes are not necessarily bad. If done right, and added on top of a working and decent game, it can add ALOT to the experience.

@Prats1993I don't think you can nail it down like that.

Some games require cutscenes, plain and simple (Final Fantasy games, MGS4). I believe if the character you are playing has a past, a strong personality or has a long talk with another character, cutscenes really can add something great!
Good gameplay is importent, but I am one of those people that enjoy solid characters and storylines. Cutscenes help build these things.
So fuck poorly made cutscenes that take away from the action, but keep the well made, well placed cutscenes coming.
P.S. Great Vid GS!

Very interesting. However, as PCs get more and more advanced, and start specing similar to the workstations that they have, I expect to see High quality games that are more of a blend between gameplay and cutscenes, as in, the quality of cutscenes with gameplay.

I've always hated cutscenes

They're just a poor excuse for developers to get out of in-game storytelling.

@MetalDogGearYour looking at it wrong. It enhances the in game story telling if done right and helps to immerse the player in the game. Although I guess it would depend on the game. Some games the less cutscenes the better so you don't break your rythm. Other games it's fine, it drives the story to the next level.

I hate this type of cut scene were you go in holding one gun and then in the cut scene you holding the default gun and you come out the cut scene still with the default gun, your chosen gun goner so you have to go look for it again, am looking at you halo 4

Resident Evil 4, simply because of how hammy and cheesy they are, as well as the Metal Gear series, and Grand Theft Auto.

When I first saw the cut scenes from Final Fantasy VII I was blown away. The same thing for Resident Evil 2. At the time I didn't think graphics could get any better.

excessive use of cutscenes is killing our games

@Voice_of_Wisdom Not necessarily games like final fantasy and other JRPG rely on cutscenes to get the story across, as long as its not overused then its okay.

TohouAsura
TohouAsura

@bgna8980 @Voice_of_Wisdom Final Fantasy XIII was a CG-fest though. It relies almost completely on cutscenes, but if you ignore those, it's clearly prevalent how shallow it is.

Blue_Tomato
Blue_Tomato

@bgna8980 @Voice_of_Wisdom JRPG is the definition of overusing cutscenes, LOL. Did you ever play a JRPG which did not make you watch at least ten minutes of nonsense dialogue first before you can even start playing? :)

There are better ways to tell stories in games I think. Look at the latest Call of Juarez for example, where a narrator is talking in the background without interrupting the gameplay whatsoever. Or Supreme Commander where the various people in the storyline are talking to you while playing, with brief cutscenes between levels. Again, not interrupting your gameplay. Or how about like in the Elder Scrolls series, where you can pick up books inside the game and read a lot of detailed background story, *if you want to*.

Cutscenes also tend to take themselves too seriously. Some humor would be a welcome sight, like in Bards Tale where you are actually looking forward to them because they give you a good laugh.

bgna8980
bgna8980

@Blue_Tomato @bgna8980 @Voice_of_Wisdom But western RPGs are quite different from JRPGs, JRPGs tend to emphasize more on story and western RPG on gameplay. Yeah I want to be able to move while the person is talking or give some kind of freedom would be nice. You're right sometimes there are too much, for instance this is not a JRPG but metal gear solid 4 had the longest I mean longest cutscenes I've ever played in a game. The ending was over an hour long as well.

I don't agree 100% with going to college/uni to study 3D, etc.
As long as you have a good portfolio, you can do it all at home, self teaching. Sometimes a lot faster

Yes, true. Experience>qualifications any day. That said, some people learn better at school, so to each his own. I've personally learnt a lot from tutorials on YouTube but I lack the support and creative energy from friends. I think being surrounded by people who help augment your skills and consistently get your creative juices flowing is an important aspect as well.

@Emerald_Scott That's not how it went in my three years of college in fact most of the people in my Java, 3D Max, Photoshop etc classes were slackers/keep to themselves people only three of us in most of my classmate graduated from Baker colleges CIS program.

It was pretty much the same when I went to college back in the 90's working on comic strips for the Broward Community Colleges newspaper with a few other like minded people was pretty fun short but fun.

@BlazingSpeed @Emerald_Scott I agree with both prespectives.

Going to school can benefit you from working with colleagues, learning directly and actually interacting with professionals, making the experience more personal and interesting, also more coordinated.

But it can also be very expensive and may not work out depending on the quality of the course itself. And thanks to the internet, you can become a homemade-professor all on your own given enough enthusiasm.
