First Impressions: Custom Robo

By

TOKYO - Custom Robo is a fighting title similar to Sega's Virtual On, except the game is presented with more of an overhead view.

Now I was not prepared for this game at all. Custom Robo is a fighting title similar to Sega's Virtual On, except the game is presented with more of an overhead view - both opponents can always be seen on the screen. It comes off really well, and without a doubt Custom Robo is now a favorite of mine from the show.

The game also offers some RPG-ish elements. In the single player mode you'll be required to travel around gathering better parts for your robot. The story starts something like this: You (named Lei) and your new Custom Robo head over to the Robot Station. A huge battle unfolds there in the Holosseum, and you must then battle the other Robos. Basically, that continues until you get to the final boss of the game, the Robo champion Mamoru.

In the arcade mode, you're allowed to select from Robos other than Lei, and you will fight with other Robos in the Holosseum. Essentially, the arcade mode is the more traditional fighter without the RPG elements.

Currently 90 percent complete, the game should be released in Japan this November.
