Strangely addictive...

Cubivore is an odd gem of a title. It's aesthetic is all it's own. Personally, I found it poking fun at early 3D games. Giant blocks covered with foliage couldn't help but remind me of what was once considered a "bush." In this regard, the look is intentionally dated, yet extremely original. On the gameplay side, it's just about as bad as anyone will tell you. The basic outlay is: fight, eat, sleep, evolve. And there isn't much deviation besides different level layouts and bosses. That said, I still find myself strangely addicted to this title.

Maybe that's the draw: The game is simple. With so many games in this day and age that aim to challenge and innovate, Cubivore's true gameplay remains easy and fun. Sometimes you just want to curl up with a game like this and let a few hours pass, especially if you've already beat all the Katamaris. :) It's funny, looking at this game, the gameplay just isn't that great, yet I find hours passing before my eyes.

You start out as this one-limbed "piggy." Basically what you do is travel across each level and ingest "bugs" and attack other cubivores, and with each different color comes a unique "mutation," (Basically, your limb just
moves to another part of your body.) which in turn gives you better abilities and whatnot. When you beat the boss and digest their limbs you then go to the mating grounds and your offspring gains an added limb. This idea ends up not being so grand, considering there are games like Graffiti Kingdom out there, which not only give you complete freedom in designing a creature but also the ability to make all of their moves.

So what gives the game its charms? Its unorthodox quirkiness and humor, the rants between levels, the mating scenes, the fact that the sun and moon are blocks, and the simplistic yet still fun gameplay.

So Cubivore is pretty much what I thought it would be. More an attempt at art than gameplay, and in this regard, I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.

Definitely not a game for everyone though.
