Good game, bad game? All I know is, after playing it for about a week (not completely), I ain't playing it no more.

What I thought would be a fun little time-killer of a video game based on a great movie is actually a run of the mill action game. I myself am indifferent about this game – it is neither good nor bad, it’s just uninspired. The game has you playing three characters (Jen, Yu Shu Lien, Li Mu Bai). They all play exactly the same and, really, it would have been the same game if, say, Jen were the only available character – she and Li Mu Bai are the only compelling characters anyway, in my opinion. The gameplay is very simple, consisting of basic but challenging “beat ‘em up” action, and light platforming. The main problem with the game is that it isn’t very exciting to play, plain and simple. Does it do the movie justice? Considering that question is to take into account that the film, in my opinion, is an excellent mix of visual storytelling, excellent casting, and fascinating fight sequences. None of the stars of the movie voice their video game counterparts, so that nixes one aspect from the flick. The game does present the “Crouching Tiger” tale (which, to my fuzzy knowledge, is actually a series of books, not just a movie) in a more elaborate, personal way than the film does (using imagery taken from the film), so that’s to its credit. The game’s rendered cutscenes are not as exciting to watch as the movie’s, and they’re pretty standard compared to other rendered cinemas from other games. The fighting is mildly entertaining, so I’d recommend taking a moderate approach towards this game. Playing this game for more than forty minutes every time you fire it up may make you despise it. The game’s soundtrack features tracks taken directly from the film and they suit the game well, but aren’t all that spectacular. The graphics are decent. Hmm…some of the environments are modestly detailed, and all character models look good and animate well; they’re pretty accurate to the movie. Again, no big deal, really; the graphics are just right. To tell the truth, I really did not have the patience to play through this entire game; I’m only half-way through and the boredom is almost unbearable, so I’ll simply remove the game from my X-Box, delete all “Crouching Tiger” save files on my X-Box hard drive, and sell the game for half of what I bought it for, which was $14.99, used. Spending more than what I’ve paid for it (I’m talkinganything over, say, 30 bucks, not fifteen) would be highway robbery, but, hey, someone aught to find value in this game. Like I said, it isn’t a bad or good game, it’s somewhere in the middle.
