Since this wasn't actually the first Crash Bandicoot game I played (the first was Warped), I sort of got a skewed view of it compared to the others. I can, however, say some definite things about it. For starters, I have to say that I have always enjoyed the Crash series right from the very beginning. Along with Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot was practically the father of 3-D platformers. The graphics are certainly nothing to complain about, for one. The gameplay is quite good; I know the stages are sufficiently long to hold my interest, the bosses are usually cool, and the game rarely has a dull moment. Of course, the saving system is just plain lousy; you have to complete a Tawna bonus round or get a gem in order to save your game. Also, getting the gems is way too hard; you have to get all the boxes in the stage and make it through without dying, whereas in the other Crash games, you merely have to get all the boxes. You do get an epilogue for getting all the gems, but it is nowhere near worth the work it takes to get them. In summary, Crash Bandicoot is a fun game and the perfect first game to have for your PlayStation. It's a great new addition to the platformer genre, even if it does have its flaws.
