I only clicked on this link, so i could post on here how completely stupid this topic is. Do you think perhaps that PS3 is more popular than the PC in Japan, because Sony is Japanese and that their primary market is JAPAN? Congradulations on making the world a little dumber with your completely useless and irrelevant topics.

Japan, the home of Sony and Nintendo, has always been known as a console-loving country. But at Tokyo Game Show 2012, companies like Alienware, Razer and Turtle Beach all have a presence. Just what IS the state of PC Gaming in Japan?
Not all of them. Most of their early stuff was garbage, but a lot of their offerings in the past few years have been great, at least their peripherals.
because when pro pc gamers start owning them online lil japanese ppl get sentimental...and start crying...BOOOHOOOHOOO.. :D
@hodgman Most PC games are way too easy compared to Japanese arcade games. Most PC gamers would get slaughtered on the first level if they ever attempted a Japanese arcade bullet-hell shooter.
The only PC genre that comes close to Japanese arcade game difficulty is the RTS, a genre dominated by their neighbours, the Koreans.
they had it right- Japanese work minimum 10 -12 hour days so that time gaming is key. though i personally this year went back to PC from my PS3, the time in boot spent in boot up, driver and system upgrades takes time.
the ps3 i can start up and barring the occasional firmware update just runs- the dx9 graphics is the problem now. what is on PC really trumps that
Never got the impression that the Japanese enjoyed PC gaming despite the fact that console games have to be created on the PC first before they can be put on disc and played on consoles. It's somewhat of a strange phenomenon actually because neighboring countries like South Korea and China are totally into PC games even though they're a bit slanted towards MMOs and Starcraft but at least they're gaming on the PC... Well, it is the Orient after all, can't expect them to be too alike. :P
I think the main reason is piracy and lost sales for the Japanese game makers. Just look at Sleeping dogs on TPB website TOO MANY Downloads! DLC is another problem they look at in the PC gamer as a "anti DLC gamer in general", to me this is no excuse for them not to make games for the PC.
BUT THE NOTION of DLC as a PC AND console gamer in general MAKES ME SICK!! For once to the every game maker not just the Japanese makers NEED to just make EXPANSION PACKS NOT DLC!! That way you can get a HARD COPY and get the DLC in one expansion pack for let's say 40$ perhaps? Milking money off of PC gamer will NOT work in this economy in the US or the world in general, this is NOT 1999 before the internet bubble burst, or 2008 which we ALL know what happened with Wall ST!! So get rid of DLC for Starters, and then make it HARDER for the PC gamer to chose TPB for games that YOU the devs and pubs make, AND I DON'T MEAN DRM, I mean make it a REALLY GOOD GAME FOR THE MONEY, AND MAKE IT AFFORDABLE meaning 30 to 50$ MAX, NONE of this 70$ Bullshit console prices, like for Black Ops 2, and for once MAKE A COMPLETE GAME FOR ME TO BUY, meaning NO EXCLUVISE DEALS FOR ADD-ON CONTENT at store like GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon, Steam, or your own store website!
This to me is one of THE MOST IRATATING THINGS AS A COMSUMER THAT IS BOTHERSOME. I mean what if someone like GOG.com, Amazon, steam, or even GameStop, has the game I want that is on sale for like 10 to 20$ cheaper, BUT dose NOT have the DLC or WHATEVER the other store has for the SAME GAME, that has the exclusive deal for that certain DLC, but is 10$ MORE?!?!
THAT IS GOING TO BE THE MAIN REASON WHY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO USE TPB MORE AND MORE IF THE PUBS AND DEVS DON'T SQUASH THIS KIND OF CARP!! I want a COMPLETE GAME if I'm going to drop half or 3/4 of a BIG BILL, PERIOD NONE OF THIS PIECEMEAL BULLSHIT, I"M NOT MADE OF MONEY!! This also applies to the Console gamer too. Bottom line go back to making expansion packs and NOT DLC, THE PARTY IS OVER!!
Also make them MORE MODDABLE!! That's the main reason why Skyrim is so popular with the PC Gamer in general, you can mod it! You would think that if a game like Final Fantasy or Mega Man was moddable that my generation of gamers that grew up on those game on the old NES,SNES, and PSX wouldn't drop big time dollars on those old series if they has mod tools for creating new levels and quests? I know I WOULD since I LOVED THOSE GAMES and like to make my own levels and quests for those games!!
Plus the makers over there are very paranoid about making a bug-free game, which is why they prefer consoles over the PC. Again this is no excuse for them anymore because, they did this with some of there ports to the PC. Tech Support and making Patches for there games in the old days for the Japanese game makers was a source of shame and scorn on both sides of the pond. I remember Final Fantasy III i.e. VI for the SNES and it had a game breaking bug in it that I exprencied while I level grinding in the W.O.R. portion of the game which ereased the save on the games battery back up, there was also some bad bugs in Final Fantasy II i.e. IV on the SNES version with the broken English translations text and stats. Many of the old NES,SNES, Genesis, and PSX games did not have the ability to patch the game itself. I think that's one their reason for there paranoia for there own market and even in the U.S. they just don't want bad PR because it's a source of shame for them, which is my opinion on the matter. Again this doesn't make any since what so ever anymore because they make patches for there games they make on the PS3, even Final Fantasy XIII-2 has a patch they made for the game, so WHY NOT MAKE FOR THE PC?!?! I know I would buy it.
My generation of gamers are all now around 30 years of age, and most of those of my age are now more a PC gamer than a Console Gamer in general. I built my own PC I spent good money on about 550$ worth and I want to see more games like Y's on the PC!! I can't afford three consoles for the next gen, I would rather just upgrade what I have for my gaming rig and go from there!! They also need to ignore the PC gamers that intimidate the makers that just don't measure up in the graphics department, I mean I'm of the opinion that gameplay and hours that are in the game and quality are what makes the game for me, I know that Binary Domain, Inversion, and Dark Souls are not the prietiest games to look at but they were FUN and THAT's what counts to me the most!!
The PC Community NEEDS TO GET OVER THE SLOGAN SAYING "BUT CAN IT RUN CRYSIS?", graphics aren't everything to every pc gamer. PC gamers need to relaise that although Crysis was groundbreaking, it also broke the PC as a developer platform in general. When Crysis was first released to the public it was very, AND I MEAN VERY SLOW to run at MAX Settings, and it's STILL SLAYS PC HARDWARE in general, you STILL CAN"T RUN CRYSIS AT 60 FPS!! If PC gamers want respect from devs you have to ditch that old axim "But can it run crysis?" People instantly think "Do I have to get that Radeon HD 7990 or GTX 690? Ugh THAT'S 1000$ down the drain not to mention the fact that you have to get a mid-level Intel CPU, and high end MOBO to get Crysis to run on MAX at 60FPS!"
Don't get me wrong I love crysis as much as the next PC gamer, but not all games are that badly made or so bug-ridden that it sparks a PC hardware arms race so to speak and causes the PC ELIETIST CROWD TO GO NUCLEAR every time the makers think twice about making PC ports or games as the main platform. I for one am not a very big fan of spending STUPID on hardware! I just get what is good for my TV which 1080p and no more. My GTX 560 ti 448 will last me for at least 4 more years and will serve me well for that time. Plus I for one am NOT going to get any 30" monitor ANY TIME SOON!! 1000$ is STUPID MONEY for a DELL or SAMSUNG 30" monitor! I will wait for it to go 250$ before swapping out hardware in my rig. My 37" Sony TV will surfice for now until those high-end monitors become more mainstream.
I think it's because the devs in Japan have grown up with consoles, while US/European game developers have been working with both.
Personally would like to think that the best solution to bringing PC gaming to Japan is to have something along the lines of an HD Touhou with PC exclusive content.
I think just misinformation about PC's/PC gaming is largely responsible for the slight it gets. It's hard for PC gamers like myself to believe but there are actually consolers out there that think you have to upgrade every 6months-2years. That's laughable and not true. Some are intimidated by the mouse/keyboard setup and aren't informed well enough to know most games these days are controller enabled, giving the option for either. Some 'still' don't know you can use a controller on a couch and have your PC hooked up to your large screen 3d, hdtv and game that way- PC gamers aren't chained to desks. I could keep going and busting PC myths, but this is getting lengthy.... *I do have to make one thing clear- although I've been a PC gamer for 20+ years I really don't care what others use, I don't hate, I don't do system wars, I'm just throwing information out there- I have console using friends too, they're just not for me.
I really, really don't think the "work hours" excuse has anything to do with it.
Yeah there's some people who work a 12 hour day, but they're not the demographic with flatscreen TVs and PS3s.
The reason Y ppl hate PC games as i think ..... bcoz they believe that PC device for doing other things than play ... and if its play or free time i can go to ps3 or any other game device coz they created for this reason. One more thing some games make PC slow even its for games and i have the latest super PC so why i bother my self ??? get ps3 and play whatever i wanna play ....
For me, I love both consoles and PC. Gaming on console and PC has its own benefits and by taking GTA into consideration, shooting in GTA is fun with mouse but how about driving? I guess controller wins.
Regarding the graphics, I don't really see a problem with that because for me, graphic itself doesn't make good games. Yes, PC triumphs over consoles for graphics, loading speed etc but hey, developers are still trying to find out the limit of consoles by doing tech demos. Also, GOW3 really surprised me in terms of graphics and loading speed with the hardware specs of PS3.
Well, does Japanese hate PC gaming...I could only say that Japanese works a lot using PC and would they continue to use the PC for gaming after so many hours of work in front of their PC? This is a pretty subjective question so...I'll just leave it. xD
Please forgive me if I have bad English as it is not my native language. :)
@Keitha313 Free Mods, you can create, delete, edit, etc..
"hackers, cheats, and no lifers", are a dime a dozen in consoles too, but they suck?, nah, just a little bit more than PC.
@Keitha313 You do realise that there's more people gaming on PCs than on consoles right? In fact like 70% of the western world plays games on a PC, a statistic you'd never find in console circles.
But I guess you were making an informed statement when you called all of those people no-lifers. After all, you're sitting here spewing hate on a gaming website. You obviously have a super-busy schedule.
there overcrowded big time,,, after work they all go home and game..its cheap and doesn't require allot of space ...Gov likes to keep it that way..stuff everyone it 6x6 cubicles 100 stories high and call it an apartment....
stupid consoles limit tech for about 8 yrs...until a new console is built...it hurts gaming if anything...frickin retards..my PC boots faster than my pS3 because PS3 takes longer to load games.....and the graphics suck by the way...duh
I'm sorry, but on average a Korean works at least two hours more than Japanese, yet still finds so many hours to play on PC the most hardcore PC games out there?
it's obviously a cultural thing...
I used to be a console fan. Then I made some new friends who did all their gaming on PC (these were the days of Half-Life, UnrealT & Quake 3) and I never went back. It didn't take long for my other friends to convert and suddenly we had a full LAN team. I only kept my consoles for exclusive titles.
@ChaosUndivided Man that UT-Quake 3 year was the most amazing experience in pc gaming, both games polished to perfection, when nowadays we only get 1 good game every 4-5 years for pc or consoles.
If consoles would support keyboards and mice on all games, PC gaming would die in a matter of minutes. It just that simple.
@mhellwege so would consoles die without hard disk drives, and thats a PC thingy isnt it? had to take that move to keep up
@mhellwege I wouldn't expect it to because PC's still have the edge on mods and map creation, owning your own servers, video recordings and stuff like that. It'd still have a market and all they'd need to do is make more games on pc allow you to use controllers and it'd go back to the price differential where you either pay more for better graphics and more features (plus free online in some cases) or you don't pay as much if you don't want to but come out with a perfectly fine console. The only real issue I'd see is that adding KB/M support would allow consoles to get RTS too which could then erode some exclusives from PC and that could do the most damage.
Still, until consoles allow mods and until gamers stop being such graphics whores I think the PC will live long and prosper. Too many PC geeks are already invested in the PC elite mentality anyway.
i do have a pc for gaming like Crysis and Warhead but when i play on it i use a controller, cause i don't have a steady hand when i aim to kill a person with a mouse and i also felt i was limited.
I don´t think so. PC gaming grew a lot recently. I judge it by sales figures. I mean before, releasing a multiplatform title on PC you would have expected 600k copies sold max. But now any good quality title at least sells 1M+ copies.
I see everyday that more and more console exclusive developpers are passing their titles on PC: Platinum Games, From Software, Square Enix, etc.
Even Dark Souls, despite all critics, sold at least 600k. And 600k is equal to the sales numbers from the whole Japan. And we all know they didn´t put a lot of inversion into a PC port. Bad thing or not, I am pretty sure that the next title of From Software will be for PC too. And next time they will certainlu put more effort into a PC version.
Manyt developpers, famous for their bad ports, actually rised their porting standards, like Rockstar´s Max Payne 3.
Witcher 2, despite being a long time PC exclusive has sold arround 2M copies on PC only.
Skyrim sold 8M copies on PC only.
Well... you can even get even Call of Duty sales number if you hype enough. I look at you Diablo 3.
I mean 1M-2M copies may not sound a lot for EA but for an average-size developper is a good money.
As I already said many Japanese developpers get 1-2M from whole Japan sales. So how they can reject another 1-2 M from PC ? They don´t. More of them will eventually expand their franchises to PC too.
I am looking at upcoming games now, and I don´t see any important title missing PC platform. Resident Evil 6, Metal Gear Solid, Watching Dogs, all those will come for PC. I mean I don´t know how you see this, but for me is a tendency.
Sadly, the main reason why there are not many PC gamers and more console gamers is simply because most people lack the knowledge to build and maintain a PC. It's not really about money, it's simply ignorance.
I have to disagree, it's really about money, a decent rig costs nearly 290$ just to play some games at lower quality. while a console costs about 264$ can play at moderate quality with a good performance. I'm not any fan of PC or console games since I play on both platform, somehow I can't keep up with PC gaming requirement nowadays.
@ChocolateAddict I think that's a fair shout. I don't have a gaming PC because speccing it out and building it is more of an investment than I'd probably get out of it. I know I'm missing out on a lot, but with a console I never need to worry if my PC is powerful enough to run a game. It just gets shoved in, and away it goes. Consoles make it very easy to be ignorant.
@ChocolateAddict I have to disagree, I think the problem is more like the problem I had in that I was tired of fighting Windows to play my games. I also was tired upgrading every six months to a year when a new game was released.
Building a PC is not rocket science its like Lego, find the right pieces and put them together ;)
See, that's exactly what ChocolateAddict is saying. If you have some BASIC PC knowledge you don't need to 'fight' Windows or upgrade your rig every six months. That's ridiculous.
@ChaosUndivided @Madball357 @wasakawaka @ChocolateAddict My PC is 4 years old and differently than ChaosUndivided, it's my main gaming rig. I can asure it has superior hardware than any console on the market. and I 'm only upgrading it after the launch of the new consoles.
@Madball357 @wasakawaka @ChocolateAddict I got my first major PC Back when the 1st X box was released and it's still more powerful then the PS3 and 360 today and never had any issues. Now I use it as a spare so my friends can join in.
What it really comes down to is the kinds of games you like to play. I'm a pc gamer because I like civilization, dota, starcraft/other rts's. Most of the cross platform games I care about come out on pc therefore that is my platform of choice. Most console gamers prefer 3rd person action games, sports games, or just want to play the latest cod/halo with their friends. Whatever you wanna do that's your style idk why so many people get so bent out of shape because of platform wars.
I don't want to get into a PC vs console debate because to each his/her own, but did that seriously say "Cyber Athlete Competition"? Don't get me wrong, it takes skill to be a good gamer, but athlete? We might as well call professional poker players, chess players, and other sitting game players athletes too then, right? Your grandmother kicks ass at bingo, so she must be an athlete too. LoL. Bonerfarts.
@jhonMalcovich I don't care what you put in front of it, the term is just a bad one if you ask me.
