Well, Half-Life is my all time favourite game and back then the game made a huge step forward in terms of changing the genre.

I hope Valve will not just take elements out of The Elder Scrolls series, but mix in some crazy new stuff and create a whole new game that will be fresh and interesting (which I know it will be :) ). Can't wait...

What id really like to see as a new method of control would be sensors on all your fingers so you hands actually appear in game, allowing you to actually open doors, smash windows and pick things up in the world!

wow how about releasing a bunch of games before complaining about hardware. how long have people waited for hl2 ep. 3 or hl3?

I have a feeling this might have something to do with the Oculus Rift

Interesting news heck they make a ton of dough off of steam alone so if they jump into the hardware making business I say let them.  Who knows maybe the guys at Valve will bring about an actual VR simulator in the future..

valve is working on a sort of stress test technology where you hook cups up to your nips and a game director like the one in l4d will decide to attack and lay off based on your stress levels, no joke either check it on youtube its insane

Valve 2 months ago: "nah were not jumping into hardware." *hangs up phone and welds capacitor on motherboard*

In other words, Ep. 3 is in beta and HL 3 is in alpha. Will be premiering with their new line of GFX cards.

valve entering hardware = the overpriced proprietary Cisco of gaming.  I'd rather not have that.

Seems to me Valve is indicating user interface devices, such as mice, keyboards, joysticks, controllers etc... and not a console.  Why not create devices that work with everyone's consoles, PC's and Macs, rather than try to create a console to compete with all of them.  So unless they are going to create the Holodeck from Star Trek TNG, I would think better peripherals is what they are looking at.

All you would need is a mouse and a nunchuk. You now have the most accurate input ever.

If Valve had a gaming console it would be awesome. Every game released on their console would have a cross-game hats feature that lets you use your account hats across every single game. Hats in Skyrim, hats in CoD, hats in Assassin's Creed, hats in Borderlands, hats in Dead Space, hats in Prototype, hats in Sonic, hats in Madden, hats in Mortal Kombat, hats in RE, hats in Mass Effect, hats in Bioshock, hats in Walking Dead, hats in Anime fighting games, the list goes on forever. Infinity Hats!

It would be a risk going into hardware at this point. However, if they make something affordable that basically plays anything released on Steam with good graphical quality then they may have a winner.

so that means analogue movement controls you can use in combination with ultrafast mouseturning speed, now you're stuck with walk or run ... on consoles you have (i think it's) nine different speeds of walking (might be six, its not THAT analogue) depending on how deep you push that stick on pc you have arrow up or nothing. It cant be that hard for razer or merc or something if they still exist, and i cant understand why no one ever did that before.

feel free to donate a few millions if it sells heh

ah fine, i've been posting this all over wherever someone capable and funded might actually read it , what do we want for pc-gamers? at least analogue movement keys on your gamer keyboard ... the only thing that's missing when it comes to controls : 9 speeds of running and turning

I think it could be a PC-Console hybrid. I.E. A console that you plug in to you're TV that allows you to use multiple USB peripherals. My guess would be competition to OnLive.

Valve recently expressed concern over Windows 8 being a closed platform which would be a headache for the Steam platform. It seems like a logical and very possible step for Valve to take.

I'm curious, although Portal (so far) has been the only game I loved I have been wanting to try out Half Life 2 for a while (just never got around to buying it on console since my PC sucks balls).

@abHS4L88 half life 2 is nice..you could get the orange box for ps3 or 360 which has 2 and the episode expansions..or get the original xbox version which just has half-life 2 ...oh and if you haven't played the original half-life you really should..piece of history

@obsequies  @abHS4L88 BTW if you haven't played the original Half-Life a mod for it called "Black Mesa" is coming this month - news can be found on GameSpot - and it features current-Gen graphics as a remake that runs the original game.

You just should have the game downloaded from steam in order for you to apply the mod. It's really great.

I miss the days when im reading an article based on FACTS and real things that are being made or have been made, not hypothetical analysing by reading job descriptions and fabricated bullsht that anyone could look up if they REALLY TRULY gave a sht. I care about things that are really being made or have been made, thats it.

I suppose that this is a good thing. The more people into hardware development, the better off consumers are.

Hey Valve, you know what would be great? If you would start making sequels to your games or, dare I say, a new IP perhaps? Damn, I knew I was asking for too much...

Will its game selection consist of entirely FPS based Half-Life mods? ;)

obsequies

@MooncalfReviews how is a developer specializing and perfecting a certain style or genre or engine a bad thing...it happens with music all the time. stones play rock..bieber plays with himself and valve makes fps titles..good ones. counter-strike and portal are obviously some of the greatest mods ever. Both pushed the first person genre/perspective.  Its nice to see a mainstream company do something interesting. yeah...

Let me put it this way, it would be a little bit like a director not only making a certain type of sci-fi action movie every time, but also using the exact same actors each time, camera angles, equipment, scenery and lighting.

I thought it was going to be called a "Steam Engine"

KeeseKiller7

I think I have a good idea as to why they would do this. And it's pretty obvious. Half Life 3. They want technology to meet talent and make something groundbreaking. I would say they have the talent. I think they're frustrated they don't have the technology they want. This could be a good move.

I won't pick one up until the $5 Steam Sale though.

@KeeseKiller7 What are you going on about? 1000 internet points says mid tier gaming rigs will be able to max out HL3 without breaking a sweat.
