It's basically CS: Source with better graphics but is still an excellent game. Not essential but a great update for fans of the series.

wow it's bad enough us campaign only (non online players) being marginalised by software companies, but now even game reviewers give barely a nod in our direction. Like millions of others who like to depend solely upon their own abilities I enjoy my own gaming without the need to talk to,rely on or get irritated/ let down by someone somewhere else on the planet. I see no appeal in fighting for the same piece of ground for 6 months day and night....BUT I accept that others do and this review (and others) that ignores the campaign fails a huge number of gamers. Maybe as software companies impose their will upon us to change how we play in order to sell DLC and addons is affecting how reviewers approach the game but I'd like to know what the game has to offer those of us who want to achieve step by step goals and move on regularly. Great review but skipped over the part that half the audience wants to know

@gravy1958 Wait? You think Counter-strike has a campaign? I was very lost in what you said there. The Counter-strike series doesn't come with a single player campaign. You buy the series knowing its only multiplayer or SOL.

WTF!? Another download only game with no retail release? Cha-ching for Valve! No thanks GabeN. You can have some more of my money when the RETAIL copy of HL2 episode 3 FINALLY comes out...by that point I'll likely be long since dead or hopefully in time to play with my future grand children. Cheers. Disappointed.

Another great review here even though the game came from the black hole.

Looks like the same game just better graphics. I'll just stick with CS: Source

I just bought this game on PSN, so far so good. Except I have no idea how to talk to anyone. I plugged in my headset and thought I could hit a button and would be able to speak but so far none of the buttons seem to work. If anyone bought this for the ps3 can you help me out with this.

I must admit I never played it but not having to aim down the sights seems lame. Plus automatic fire doesnt seem to generate a great deal of kickback at all.

Not sure if he's using aimbot or I just suck.

Just wanted to say that I was very skeptical about the "mouse and keyboard required" part at first but after I tried the demo on 360 I can tell that Kevin is totally right. I usually have the best aim at FPSs in general (like sniping running targets on battlefield) and I just couldn't get the hang of it, I mean, I had to shoot a guy standing still in close quarters 5 times with a shotgun before I got him, and shooting people from a distance with an auto gun is hard as hell. Since there is no zoom-in, zoom-out for weapons other than the sniper rifle, mouse and keyboard are your best friends.

I'm not going to actually put in a lousy rating just yet because I know they tweak weapon/movement stats a lot for CS games. However, at release, the weapon balancing was TERRIBLE.. Hit detection was worse than CS:S (which is saying something) and player movement was way too twitchy (if the weapons are designed so that spraying is virtually useless, then you should strafe relatively slowly as well - however, in CS:GO, you can't hit anything while spraying and yet you can side-step at retardedly fast speeds.) In CS:S, spraying was effective in gungame as long as you were within a reasonable range. In CS:GO, I have had multiple instances where spraying full clips at point blank fails to even register a hit, let alone kill the target. Again, I haven't played enough to pass full judgment on the game yet.. But it certainly needs some tweaking if I'm going to stick with it for long.

This Is one of the original FPS Daddy's (along with Quake, Unreal Tourny etc...) and as such has us playing on 56k dial up modems (Google it) hideous beige 19" monitors and txt chat. That said its more than nostalgia, it's a (re)fresh take on a tired format. I love it, I hope we get Protect The VIP on Oil Rig. Claustrophobic when left on your own, only a pistol/knife, trying to get to the chopper while being hunted by T's.

I feel like I am going crazy.

Either that or I'm just too old now. But this game doesn't look good, at all. Weapon animations/looks are terrible. The firing from the hip, which most of us have been trained is a bad idea (BF3) works here and takes the genre backwards. The jerky motion of the AK for example as it fires looks cheap. As I said, I feel I am going mad because I seem to be the only one who thinks this. True, graphics aren't everything, but when games like BF3 exist (like it or not), releasing a game that looks and feels like this, is just dreadful.

ZaneZane
ZaneZane

@Lord_Norr It's unfair to compare the two games though. First of all, they're at different price ranges. Comparing a $60 game to a $15 one doesn't make much sense. Then there is the weapon recoil aspect of counter strike that CS fans love. In BF3 and MW games, the crosshair remains true at all times (i.e. the bullet will go where your crosshair is), so a main part of the game is to land the crosshair on the enemy as fast as possible. In CS, the main technique is to control the burst or the spray of a particular gun, because only the first bullet is accurate to the crosshair; the rest have a "spray pattern" that you have to compensate for with your mouse. And thirdly, I agree that the graphics look kind of dreadful. I don't know who plays CS:Go; but for me, who was playing CS 1.6 up to the point where GO was released, don't find much problem with it. In fact, I turn down the graphics to lowest so the character models stand out from the background, which makes it easier to see the enemy. For me, the game is like a sport. I do the same thing over and over again, playing the same map over and over again, but yet I still find it fun.

@ZaneZane  @Lord_Norr Zane all your points are valid except for the way you group BF and MW together. They are very different games just like CS:GO is different. Yes MW is about speed and getting the crosshair lined up as quick as possible but BF is very different, it's very realistic with the bullet trajectory being affected by distance etc and weapon recoil playing a large part also. Just pointing it out because to people who don't know both the BF games and the MW games very well it may seem on the surface that they are similar but its far from the truth. MW (still fun in its own way) feels like a paintball game after having played BF extensively.

@Lord_Norr That's how Counter Strike fans like it though and its a formula that works. Every game has its place. If you want BF3 go play BF3

Why does it look like such a sprayfest compared to the others? :(

sogni_belli
sogni_belli like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@DeadlyVip3r If you want to actually hit your opponent in CS, you don't spray.  Short, controlled bursts or double tap.  Running out and spraying is just a fast ticket to getting your dome sniped.

Looks like I need to switch to mouse and keyboard. Makes me feel pretty good that I still have a nice k/d ratio with the ps3 controller though..

I don't care for realistic FPS games... but Keyboard and mouse play support for PS3... far as I know it was only for internet navigation, wasnt it?... I always wonder why most FPS developers wont implement it to other FPS games like Killzone or Resistance... thumbs up Valve!

 @KingofCabal

true, and one thing I liked is I didn't see people jumping non stop so that others can't aim them, which I find ridiculous. I must admit it looks addictive, but shooters of this genre are always the same. Using a mouse reduces the small part of realism in a game and gives you a fair advantage over someone with a controller, not to mention the laughable speed at which the player can switch in between the items in his hands.

I love how when COD noobs come in and say "How do i choose my perks?" or "What's the key to aim down sights?" (both of which I personally hear daily) everyone just says "F10" (quits the game) and 10 seconds later, you see "____ has disconnected".

Just realized that Arms Race looks familiar to COD's Gun Game (in my opinion), but Sabotage, now that's new.....

Good job devs (not being sartastic, but really).... You sure deliver this better than the guys at CSO....

@MN121MN  Tell me that you know COD's Gun Game was a copy of a Counter-Strike game mode. Not the other way around.

@MN121MN Gun Game was originally a CS mod and had nothing to do with COD.
