Up until now, I have only really played the first Contra on the NES, and I absolutely loved that game. It was an easy decision for me to spend 800 Wii points on this SNES debut, and I have zero regrets.
I enjoy everything about this game. Visually it looks great. The artwork is just really well done. I enjoy the explosions, the mayhem caused by the many weapons and power-ups you'll find, and the never-ending variety of enemies -both living and machine - to deal with. And musically it also gets the job done with tunes that suit the theme - fast paced and intense. I swear if you ever took speed and played this game your head would explode.
The merciless challenge is what I love most though. There is no health bar, no forgiveness for any performance that is less than perfect. At times there is so much lethal "stuff" flying at you from every conceivable angle, and it takes MAD skills to not only avoid your death, but to obliterate all the sources of said death. And of course don't become too attached to the latest gun that you're relying on to devastate all those enemies, because dying leaves you with only your basic weapon -which thankfully is fully automatic.
This game to me represents everything that I have always loved and will always love about games. You can have all the realistic graphics and powerful processors that you want, but nothing can ever replace the beautiful simplicity of such a challenging and visceral experience as games of the good old 16bit era. There are not too many games nowadays that provide such a pure challenge that involves inhuman reflexes, timing, and less-than-split second thinking to claim victory. I LOVE these old games.
