139 votes and not a single review yet for this classic title! This was the port of the arcade game of the same name for the NES. It was another instant classic for Konami (much like Castlevania). Very open controls (move and shoot in any direction), lots of different weapons to choose from, multiplayer was fantastic (nothing better than a friend helping you with covering fire). The storyline was definitely odd, though interesting. Playing members of a special forces elite commando squad, you venture into the Amazon to take on an alien threat, Red Falcon, who's trying to use Earth as a base of operations to take over the universe. The game was definitely chalenging, if you were hit by shots or just touching enemies you were instantly dead (no health system). It was more important to keep from being hit than to take out your opponents. The game was very skill based, which made it very replayable (a key to success in a day and age when graphics and sound weren't as important as gameplay). This game is completely worth playing, even in this day of Doom3 and high-end graphics. Get yourself a copy and grab a friend, it's a great time. If you'd like to play a polished version, take a look at Contra 3: The Alien Wars for the SNES, arguably the pinancle for this series.
