Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A start

User Rating: 10 | Contra NES

Contra is one of the most loved games of all time. Memorable as much for Konami's well used code Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start as for its gameplay. When the games of the late seventies and early eighties start changing from little blocks and paddles to human figure shapes, games changed. In 1985 with the release of Super Mario Bros and its side scrolling format, game changed yet again. Games like Double Dragon, an action sidescrolling melee fighter, and Contra, a shooting sidescroller, cemented the action game as as a stanard format.

Contra offered the player a variety of different weapons to use along the way include a scattergun that fired 3 big projectiles in a V pattern and a fire gun that fierd in a rolling looping pattern. These weapons reverted back to your standard machine gun over time but were very helpful in reaching your goal in the amount of time you did have them. Blasting through waves of aliens has never been so fun. Twenty years after its release, its still fun.

Emulators, and places like Gametap will make sure this masterpiece will live on for future generations to enjoy.
