Mobile Wonder Wednesday: Shadowgun
Shadowgun User Review
This week we take a look at Shadowgun for the iOS.
"Madfinger Games, with the help Unity, have created a really great third-person shooter that focuses on cover mechanics and set-piece battles. Though most of these battles will take place in corridors or internal areas, they're never restrictive and there is usually more than one way to approach the situation. It is a treat to see such excellent level design on a game made for mobile devices.
Shadowgun's greatest strengths are its control scheme and striking good looks. The developers managed to nail button-less cover, a brave design decision when creating a game where cover is as important as in other similar shooters such as Gears of War. Simply by approaching cover, the on-screen character will slide into place and be firmly cemented until the player pulls straight back on the floating virtual stick.
I never experienced any real pains or frustrations with the scheme. If I had to nitpick about anything, it would be that not all objects you find will be objects your character can use to take cover. However, before you make it half way through the first of the eight levels, you'll have a good understanding of what constitutes potential cover and what doesn't.
Shadowgun looks so good on the iPhone's screen that you may find yourself stopping to take in the scenery on more than one occasion. The lack of jagged edges would be enough to make even the high-end PC gamer jealous, lest they be equipped with the latest in graphical hardware. Textures appear detailed, edges are round and smooth, and the effects, while a bit unorthodox, are enough to make you feel the intensity of the battle.
For all its beauty, one of Shadowgun's greatest failing is in the utter lack of variety. It's a shame that the graphical fidelity isn't highlighted further by the addition of more outdoor scenarios, a larger cast of enemy combatants, or more than one basic location. I'm sad to report that I began feeling a sense of deja vu through a few sections, as if I'd already been there and fought through this corridor before. Every time I thought we were going to have a real change of scenery, the game pulls you back to a place all too familiar.
The other problem, while not as critical as the former, is the story. Not only is it disjointed, but it borrows heavily from other games (something that becomes quite clear after defeating the final boss). While the concept of borrowing heavily from some of the more successful console and PC titles isn't new, it's still a little disappointing. Mobile gaming is a new frontier, so developers should be doing what they can to treat it as such.
Without a doubt Shadowgun's strengths greatly outweigh its weaknesses. The controls are tight and appropriate, it looks simply fantastic, and what it lacks in variety it makes up for in gameplay and excellent pacing. Even though the negatives may appear to some to be deal breakers, it is without question that the game is truly a good time. That's what is most important." - musicalmac

Issues With the Site Continue
We understand that these issues are frustrating, and we appreciate your patience during this time. If you notice something wrong with the site's functionality, please feel free to let us know in the site enhancements forums. And make sure to keep in mind that clear and concise descriptions about the issue are far more useful than telling us something like "L2 not glitch GS." -
The Daily Report Returns!
What's Happening?
Games Pages Updated
Remember when we told you that there would be some changes made to the game pages late last week to allow easier searches through places like Yahoo! and Google? Well, it has finally happened! Check out the changes by visiting one of my most anticipated games: Skyrim. Feel free to share your feedback in the Site Enhancements forum.Uncharted 3 Game Night: Canceled
Due to a technical difficulty and lack of resources, we will be canceling the Uncharted 3 Game Night that was set to take place on Wednesday. We will be revisiting our future potential game nights, as well as taking suggestions for potential game nights for the remainder of 2011.September and October Trivia Winners
We gave away a lot of really awesome prizes over the past six weeks during our "Now Playing" and "On the Spot" episodes. What was up for grabs? Who won the prizes? Well check out this report for details.Sonic-Themed Playground
Last Friday, the GameSpot Community traveled to the mystical land of Oakland to build a playground with Sega and Kaboom to build a Sonic-inspired playground. And after a few tons of concrete and sod later, the play space was finished. For more details on this event, be sure to check out Synthia's blog later this week.Saints Row: The Third - Character Battle
GameSpot's character battle presented by Boost Mobile is off to a strong start. With hundreds of creative submissions, the playing field has been narrowed to a mere 100 entries. Who will win ultimate bragging rights? The character that receives the most votes during the battle period will be deemed the winner of the King of Saints Character Battle and become the first in the queue of characters available in the Saints Row: The Third game. Vote for your favorite NOW!UPDATE at 2:40 PM PT :Profile URL Changes
We've made some changes to the profile url, which will keep your account secure. The "~self" part in your profile is there for privacy, which will avoid revealing usernames to advertisers. However, at this time if you try to share a blog or content from your profile the page will likely display the user who visits it. For instance, drop by a recent blog and it will show your profile banner and avatar, which is a bug. The best way to resolve it is to have a permalink, which is something the technical staff will resolve at some point. -
Game Pages Update Coming Soon!
We'll be making some changes to the game pages sometime today. The changes will make it much easier to find GameSpot content in the search engines. Be sure to use the FEEDBACK tab on the any of the game pages, and if you have technical problems, you'll want to drop by the Technical Support forum.
UPDATE at 4:37pm PT on 11/3: I've been notified that the changes won't be happening today. Also, when it does happen, there won't be a Feedback tabs on the pages. If you have any feedback you can post them in the comments or the Site Enhancements forum.
UPDATE at 4:18pm PT on 11/4: False alarm! Looks like it won't be happening until early next week. Thanks for your patience on the changes.

Little Break
Hello GameSpotters!
We're going to be taking a little break from the daily reports, but they will pick back up during the week of November 5. You can still expect some random announcements in the community news, but it won't include the user videos, reviews, and blogs.
Also, don't forget that we have multiple Halloween activities happening around the site, and be sure to watch and comment on the Halloween episode of On the Spot. We'll be handing out a crazy Tom Magrino with an Afro emblem sometime next week.
As for other interesting things happening on the site, Saints Row: The Third Initiation Station is something you should check out! We also published Episode 2 of The Controller, and there's a roll call thread you should post in for a chance at the Episode 2 emblem. That's it for now. I'll see you next week.
