Chalk Talk Contributing Editor Casting Call
Last week we revealed the GameSpot Writers Roundtable, a new program dedicated to the amazing writers of GameSpot.
As part of roll out of this new program, we are announcing a casting
call for 'Contributing Editors' for the second edition of Chalk Talk.When Chalk Talk was first introduced in June of 2012 one of the initial components considered to help make this feature unique was giving users the chance to appear as contributing editors. Essentially, this roll would allow you to choose the Chalk Talk topic, which blogs would be featured, as well as getting a byline as "Contributing Community Editor".
If you are interested in volunteering to become a Contributing Editor for Chalk Talk you can go to the official discussion and include; a brief bio about why you want to be a contributing editor, and the topic you want to write a Chalk Talk feature for.

Introducing the Writer's Roundtable!
We have an exciting new program and volunteer dedicated to GameSpotters who enjoy publishing editorial blogs and user reviews on GameSpot. In the past month we've recruited prolific writers to assist with a new program called the GameSpot Writers Round Table (GSWR). Starting today, you can share your written work in GSWR prior to publishing it.
In addition to being an ideal place to get insights about your writing, the GameSpot Writers Round Table is the perfect place to gain recognition from GameSpot Staff. The experts who will be examining your work are volunteers known as "Justicars". If you wish to become an official GameSpot Justicar, simply submit an application to the community@gamespot.com email with the subject "Justicar Application" with a brief introduction, examples of your work, and why you should be considered.

If you overheard the news about the subscription service changes this month, the changes we rolled out on the site today will be no surprise. Free registrants now have access to create a user created board, customize their forum name colors, and download videos in HD.
- User created boards: To create or change your UCB settings, go to members only and you’ll find a way to create your UCB there.
- Custom forum name colors: To change the color of your username in the forums, go to your settings under members only.
- HD video downloads: To download a video in HD, visit a video page and click the downloads button.

Starting today, all free registrants level 5 or up can create a topic in the Ask GameSpot forum. We figured it was about time to share some of the things that may cause an editor or video producer to answer your questions!
- Controversy: Who would have thought, right? Well, if you find topics in the game industry that may cause our editors to think, maybe they'll answer your question in the forum.
- Technology: If there’s anything we hear our editors and video producers talk about, it’s about the latest technology. We may not have a dedicated hardware editor but all of our staff keep up with the trends and news around technology and gaming.
- Industry Trends: Game distribution has changed a great deal in the past few years so if you have questions about our content or other related industry trends, that’s a good question to ask the editors.
- Medium Crossover: We see it all of the time, films about a popular game, actual game merchandise or perhaps you know of a television show that showcased a game? Any of this is often fun for the editors to consider in features, so maybe this is another topic worth sharing!
- Video content of all kinds: We have a variety of video producers that enjoy seeing your questions that they can answer. If you have a question about a show, video content, or a livestream ask away! Especially around the times we’re doing coverage of live events!

Tip: Reporting Abusive Comments
A recent question we've been asked involves the way we handle abuse in the comments.
What to report: With our updated community rules we no longer moderate for profanity or inciting flames unless it contains personal life threatening statements or harassment about someone’s ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability. Other items that we’ll moderate include advertisements, flooding/invasion behavior, illegal activities, grotesque, and sexually explicit content.
How to report offensive abuse: If you see someone posting content that falls under personal life threatening statements or harassment about someone’s ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability, click on FLAG and then select the offensive category.
How to report illegal activities and advertising abuse: If you see someone posting content that falls under illegal activities or advertising, click on FLAG and then select the advertising category.
If you have questions about the types of content we moderate, please post them in the Moderation Clarification forum.

Commenting System Update
There have been several new features added to the existing commenting feature. Now users have the ability to edit their comments, apply rich text formatting, and they change how notifications work. You’ll also notice Staff, Rangers, Moderators, and Game Rep icons! We’re still currently in the process of fighting for things like emoticons so be sure to share your feedback if there is something you want to see in our commenting system.GameSpot Paid Services Ending
Last week we announced that GameSpot’s paid subscriptions services would be ending, there was a nifty FAQ that was released that helped to provide information on what this change would mean for the current subscribers as well as current members without the service.Contest Winners, People won stuff!

GameSpot’s paid subscriptions services ending
GameSpot paid membership service granted subscribers additional benefits, these included things like ad-free browsing, User Created Boards, game store discounts, HD downloads, and more. Today, we’ve officially announced that we are ending this service.
What this means for our current paid subscribers, you will continue to receive all of your account benefits until your subscription term expires. The good news, some of the subscriber benefits will now be carried over to free registrants, so you’ll still receive the same benefits such as HD 720p downloads, the ability to create a user-created forum board, and the ability to select a color for user names in forum boards.
There is a detailed FAQ available to help answer any additional questions you may have. Please read through it and share your feedback as always.
GameSpot would like to thank all of our loyal subscribers for being a part of the services that we offered. And while we currently have no plans to resurrect or reinvent any paid subscription benefits if there is enough demand for us to do so we may reconsider.

Commenting System Update!
Livefyre Version 3 Update
The new commenting system update is here and is being integrated on GameSpot. Why is this important to you exactly? Well for starters, a few of the features that had been requested are now available to us. In addition to a few cosmetic upgrades there are several new functions including comment editing, rich text formatting, and more.
Editing Comments
This was quite possibly one of the biggest requests we had from the community when we first switched to the new commenting system last year. Now users are able to edit their comments directly from the stream by clicking the edit link besides the comment. However, the caveat to that is you are given a limited time to edit your post. But don’t worry, you still have the option to fully delete what you posted if a day later you go back and decide that you didn’t want to troll that poor noob.
Rich Text Formatting: Now with more pretty!
The update now supports rich text formatting, you can now bold, italicize, underline, and include numbered or bulleted lists.
Notifications and Alerts: Hey, hey… LISTEN!
This got a major overhaul in regards to its functionality. For starters, when new comments are being posted, you'll see that the "New Comments" notification is less intrusive, showing at the bottom of the screen rather than in the middle of your content.
Next we have alerts, lets say you want to send a message to one of your GameSpot friends about the latest Pokemon news, by "@'ing" the user in the comments (Example @JodyR) it will now send an email notification to that user provided their settings allow that style of notification. This also works with people you are following on Twitter and as well as your friends on Facebook.
Also as a reminder, if you wish to receive notifications to your email address when someone has replied, or liked one of your comments, or posted in one of your blogs or an editorial that you commented in make sure that your notification settings are correct. To do this, go to your fuse.gamespot.com profile and select how and when you would like to be notified.
Media Overload: Youtube, Flickr, and Instagram… Oh my!
The new commenting system now supports linking to both images and video embeds from Youtube, Flickr, and Instagram accounts.
Flagging Abuse: Who you gonna’ call?
We’ve all seen our fair share of abuse in the comments section of various stories and articles, well now in addition to your ability to flag the comment as Off-Topic, Disagree, Offensive, or Spam you can now enter text with extra info pertaining to your report.
Comments of Yesteryear
But wait, are you still missing your comments from your blogs that were posted in 2008 and earlier? We are currently aware that there are many blogs that are currently lacking this data, don’t worry its all safe and sound in a little box and will be applied to the site in due time. And while we don’t currently have an ETA for when those older comments will be available it is something that is being actively worked on.

New Year Interwebs Checklist!
It's that time of the year again to get your interweb persona in check! Here's the things we suggest for the new year!
1) Security is a must. How many times did you or your friend get breached in 2012? Read our previous tip of week for more details.
2) Spruce up your image. If it's an avatar or actual photo of yourself, consider making it more current on the websites you use.
3) Update your about me information on GameSpot and elsewhere. Maybe you've explored new games and genres, no need having people read old messaging from years ago.
4) Update your forum signatures. Keep in mind that animated .gifs must be under 1MB.
5) Follow fatigue? Visit your profile while being logged out. What do others see about you? No blog or review in a year? Make one or you may lose followers.
6) Anniversary blog emblems are up for grabs, but you need to share them with us in this reporting topic!
7) Get organized! If you have a list of games you want to finish or try out, create a blog or list on an external website or phone app that will allow you to monitor your progress.
8) Make sure your email is accurate to receive alerts about responses other users have made in the comments and to receive the newsletters you're subscribed to. You can change your comments email settings by going to your Fuse settings and you can change your newsletter settings by going to the main site settings
9) Follow other GameSpot social channels like Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch! We often give out codes randomly and if you subscribe to Twitch you receive a notification via email once we've started a livestream.
10) Join GSPN! There you'll have a chance to find other people who enjoy certain things about gaming as yourself. You can also find others attempting to play co-op for a specific game and more.

Dokuro Game Giveaway!

Dokuro Doodle Contest
One of the whimsical characteristics to Dokuro is its charming chalk board art style. Participants will inspire themselves with GameSpot screen shots and images to create a Dokuro Doodle.
You can capture any element of the game in your drawing so long as there is a clear correlation between your art and the game. The traditional art medium to the game is very chalk like, but for this contest we will be accepting all styles.

Share your history with the game or if you have friends that play it. Even if you've never tried the game, you can even write about avoiding it and why. League of Legends Celebration: Writing Challenge!
Hello GameSpotters! If you've never tried League of Legends or you know all about it, join us to celebrate the game in our holiday parade! Each week we'll offer a writing challenge and this week is an easy challenge. We'd like to know how you know about the game or what you know about the game. Have you been playing since the beta or perhaps started this week? Share your history with the game or if you have friends that play it. Even if you've never tried the game, you can even write about what has caused this.
