This is the first 3d command & conquer. That alone makes it a special game. Even in 1999 all command & conquers on the PC were 2d and then out of nowhere they came up with this one on the beloved Nintendo 64. The game is essentially a remake of the original c&c. It also features some bonus missions which i believe are from c&c expansion. The videofootage of the original has been replaced by stills, but it works out ok. The voices of the actors come across just fine. At the end of each mission you get to see a short animation of a tank or helicopter, but it's the same animation over and over again and it looks real ugly. The animations of the original are not in the game. Strangely enough all of the ingame audio did make onto the N-64 cartridge and also they have found room to put all the audio in a French version on it, so you can play the game in French if you desire.
Now about the game. Like i said this is the first c&c in 3d. You can zoom in, zoom out on the landscape, it's just great. All of the units and buidings are also in 3d offcourse. When you drop an atomic bomb you get to see a 3d explosion, it's beautiful. The gameplay is just like the original, so it's really good. Some missions you have to infiltrate an enemy base with a special commando so you have to do some puzzling. Other missions you make naval landings or you have to rescue someone. It is very diverse. The only thing is that since it's on a Nintendo 64 there's no multiplayer, so after the campaigns and bonus missions, you're finished. There is not much replayvalue. This game does prove however that a realtime strategy game on a home console can be better and more fun then on a PC. It was just way ahead of it's time.
ps; the game makes use of the nintendo 64's expansion pack for better graphics. i recommand not using it. the graphics are slightly better, but it causes slowdown in the framerate.
