This is probably the first game played on the Atari 2600 by most people since it was packaged with the system. Combat was not a technical master piece by any stretch of the imagination. Broken down to its roots it was basically pong with the objective being to hit the other paddle. But Atari came up with replay gold for this game. By allowing a ton of different levels and ways to play them they kind of kept people coming back to try something new. Did you master the straight shot in the tank maze levels? Well try the ricochet levels next. Creaming your sibling as a jet pilot? Try being the giant fighter vs 3 planes. That is how Atari kept Combat playable and enjoyable for so many new gamers. But in the end I think it was its simple design that was its down fall. Other games like pitfall or yars revenge that used different colored sprites just showed how simple a game Combat was. Which is unfortunate because if it was updated with a better sprite design it could have easily lasted longer.
