While gameplay is a bit repetitive in nature, the overall play of the game isn't thoroughly unenjoyable.

User Rating: 7.1 | Colosseum: Road to Freedom PS2
You're a recently acquired slave in ancient Rome with a price of 1,000,000 S on your head. What do you do? Fight your way to freedom. You can train and eat to raise your stats, and you can partake in battles to gain better weapons and armor from fallen opponents, either to bolster your own armory, or to sell and make you even more money than you get from the matches themselves. At first, you may be wowed by the visuals. I mean, how often do you get to bust gladiators in the Colosseum in ancient Rome? Of course, you might be a little disappointed when you take a better look at the crowd and see a bunch of fuzzy 2d fill in audience members with three frames of animation. Oh, well. There are worse things in the world. Other than that, the visuals aren't that bad. Sound is unimpressive, taking you through a fairly short loop of music filled in with by a constant "general roar of shouting people" sound. It fits the mood, anyway, and you don't notice that much, but it doesn't really grab your attention, either. Control isn't that difficult to learn, with your face buttons making attacks high, low, from the left, or from the right. There's an RPG element as well, where you can fight in various styles, either unarmed, single sword, sword and large shield, or double sword. (And when they say sword, it means any weapon, from flails to clubs.) The more you use it, the better you get at it. There are a few different sorts of bouts you can partake in, from team one versus team two, survive in a time limit, you versus several dozen guys, three at a time, or the good ol' battle royale. There's also battle recreations, where you fight against another army in the taking of various cities.... Of course, once you've tried all those modes, it just comes down to bashing a bunch of gladiators to make money, then coming back out to bash a bunch more gladiators. A bit repetitive, perhaps, but... hey. It's kinda fun.
