Notable tank RTS, if you really love tanks a lot.

User Rating: 7.5 | Codename: Panzers, Phase One PC
True to the title, this game specializes in tank combat, which is the main attraction here. Yes there're infantry and emplacement units as well, but they're either too vulnerable mid game onwards or just too slow to use in battle. But since tanks are one of the fascinated machines of war for most WWII enthusiasts, the great variety of tanks in this game served quite well for this purpose.

The lengthy single-player campaigns are separated into 3 factions, where you play the Germans first. Most of their scenarios are a cruise, but the pity is that you won't get to use their infamous machines like the Tiger tanks. The Russian missions started to feel a little hard as the odds are tilted further against you, and ammo usage is getting to be an issue. You would find that as you play on, the only strategy you would rely on is to clear an area with your tank rush, stop to repair and ammo refill, rinse and repeat. Artillery and the occasional commander powers varies the routine, fortunately. But even so, you still have to bear with tedious pathfinding due to stiff AI and narrow urban passages frequent in most of the later missions. The USA campaign consists of iconic scenarios like D-Day and Battle of the Bulge, in an RTS format.

Overall, this game plays and looks decent at that time when it was first released, but with better WWII strategy games like Company of Heroes, Codename Panzers feels a bit too slow with the area clearing grind, and for sound, you may notice the monotone tank rolls and explosions a little too obvious and the lack of natural ambience sounds for a realistic experience. Perhaps due to the limited flexibility of the gameplay, I wouldn't give it a high recognition, but I guess it would be a hit if I played it back in 2004.
