Dread, Terror and not a bad game either

User Rating: 7.5 | Clock Tower 3 PS2
Clock Tower 3 is takes a different slant on the survival horror genre, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine have all manor of herbs and firpower to get them through their zombie related adventures in Resident evil, as does Regina never leave home without a large shotgun when she goes up against hoards of beasts in Dino Crisis, no in Clock tower you play as Alyssa a young girl who for the most part has no weapons, no martial arts moves , she can do two things though....Scream and Run! You may scoff at how this could ever work but far from being useless clock tower 3 really does deliver many great moments that inspire a real sense of dread and panic in the player I can say with confidence this game shredded my nerves easily as many times as the greatest of the resident evil series and Doom 3 it's the feeling of the characters helplessness that really gets the adrenaline pumping. Alyssa has a panic bar...when she is attacked of gets freaked out this rises,,,if it gets all the way to the top she has a complete panic attack,,,screaming, tripping over and failing arms included as standard, take a hit while she's flipping out and its curtains. Alyssa's adventure sees her involved with the spirit world, she will meet the ghosts of unfortunate murder victims which through interaction, viewing cutscenes for clues she must help finally rest in piece usually by finding a sentimental item belonging to them, however its not all that easy since the evil ghost or the murderer in question will be hunting you and hounding your efforts. Heres the games real magic some of the killers you come up against a real mean characters that have a really unsettling edge to them, you really don't want these guys to catch up with you. So how can you escape, well you can run...and then you can hide, various locations serve as hiding places, if the evil spirit looses track of you they will teleport away waiting to turn up again when you least expect it...Hiding is great as it switches the game to a first person view...there are some great moments of tension as you hide behind a curtain with a killer you have no chance of fighting tearing up the room searching for you. other points serve as escape points reaching one of these points will trigger a cut scene in which Alyssa will use her surroundings and some stylish dodges to knock out her spiritual stalker for a time, giving you a little breathing room. When all the ghosts in an area are put to rest you face that areas spirit stalker in a boss battle in which Alyssa uses a magical bow and arrows which she must use to bind and destroy the boss , these sections are a little clumsy and not as well concieved as I would have liked perhaps some sort of strategic boss battle would have been preferable. The Strongest point of this game really has to be its cut scenes, really gripping stuff the murders shown are brutal and the other scenes well planned out which means Kudos to the director and art team that came up with them. The sound bites your stalker throws out can get repettetive at times but I find them quite amusing so can't complain about them, maybe it's not the same in the US but here in the UK the characters all had hilarious english accents couldn't help but smile when a clown type fiend wielding axes first appeared and said something along the lines of "Come on now Alyssa there will be no escaping me" the best this was he says it so Blaze' that it might as well have been "Come on Now Alyssa, don't eat too many sweets or you'll spoil your appetite before dinner." hillarity reigns supreme. So in short....concept different which means good, Controles ...hmm so so...camera angles can be a pain...cutscenes top stuff...all in all interesting if not astounding if you see it and the price is right you should consider picking it up.
