User Rating: 8.2 | Civilization III: Gold Edition PC
It's all about the gameplay. If you've never had the opportunity to play a Civilization game, this is the best in the series. The gameplay is still drastically different from any of the popular strategy games. The game clears up a lot of the micromanaging seen in the past games, but not at the expense of feeling like you have total control over your empire. The game expands on their previous concepts of advisors. No longer will technology advances be a shot in the dark for us lay people. The Civlopedia is also just a right-click away. This game is much more user friendly than its predicesors. The graphics are not the best you'll see. Even with the addition of animations they seem pretty dated. The game runs in 800x600 which gives you an idea of what your looking at. The sounds are adaquate at best. They won't be laughable or detract from the gameplay, but they won't be in the running for any awards. The value in the game is limitless. The new game mode allows players the freedom to choose what features their new world map will have. Things like map size and how aggressive the barbarians are examples. A new map is created randomly each time. The addition of multiplayer is more of an after thought and is only really playable with a friend you know now. There isn't a huge following. Even though you can find a random game from time to time, you're mostly on your own. All in all Civilization III focuses on the gameplay. It's an entirely different experience than the Real-time Strategy Genre and is great pratice for anyon interested in global domination.
