Civ 2 effortlessly makes the transition from PC to PS. A great strategy you will lose yourself in for hours.

Civilisation 2 comes from Sid Meier, arguably the most important Game Designer in the world. And if Civilisation 2 is a showcase for his work, then that title may well hold true as this is a very solid strategy title that you will continue to play long after you initially complete it - the urge will be that strong. Civilisation 2 is a turn based strategy game. While this game is better recognised on the PC, developer Atari have taken what works, and created a game that Playstation owners should feel proud to display. While there is nothing similar to this on the Playstation, the in-game tutorial will easily get you into the action, and you will find yourself spending many hours just tinkering with your civilisation, waiting for the chance to take on the world. Starting from the year 3500BC, you are named the emperor of your civilisation, and must steer it towards success. It will be up to you to mine resources, harvest food, be diplomatic with your neighbours, create cities and everything else in between that will shape your entire people. In fact, the game runs for over 5000 years, right into the near future. It will be up to you to win the game by either becoming the most powerful civilisation in the world, or by being the first to colonise another planet. This is a highly involved matter, and those looking for a quick game will be turned away, as it will take you many hours to fulfil the promise of your people, and win the game. However, for those interested, you are in for a treat. The game is wonderfully made, and is different each time you play. You will shape the course of your civilisation, and it is your decisions that will dictate how the game plays. You can be a noble republican, or a violent dictator. Will you take on the world by force, or diplomatically? Only you will make that decision. However, while wonderful to play, many gamers will be turned off by this games fairly poor graphics. The playstation can handle much more than this, and with text that is sometimes unreadable, a very bad world map which is more hindrance than help, and information screens which look more at home on the PC, this makes it difficult for the casual gamer to get into. Another problem is the music. Thankfully, there is the option to turn it off as while initially catchy becomes irritating and repetitive. You will be looking for that option sooner than you'd like, although at least the effects are acceptable, though there are very few. Overall the little problems cant hold back the charm of this wonderful game. It is a lot of fun to play, and although has shortcomings and you can easily see that this is more your PC game, Playstation fans should be very happy with Civilisation 2.
