Its free to play now, so there's no real reason not to give it a try.

I wish they would do follow up reviews on MMOs. They change regularly, and it would be nice to know how/if they've improved over time. Maybe yearly micro-reviews. At least with this one I can check it out for free. :)

From the review, it doesn't sound all that great... but hey, it's free now. And anything free is worth having :D Except, you know... herpes :P

its a decent game. has a lot more content now. it's free to play for the silver membership ( after you pay for the retail version). you can even us a game pad. don't know if it's better or not then DC's game not paying 50-60$ to find out lol. This was supposed to be Marvel's game but marvel backed out for some reason. however silver ( free) is limited to what you can create an have access to which is expected that would really piss off the gold members if you could lol. but i like it , other than CoH and DCU not many superhero online games out there especially free ones

I am not the typical mmo player. Have been playing them since eq, ao and uo (not really mmo with all the hacks). Currently have scripts to lotro, aion and CO. I don't know what it is about this game but I love it. Content? missions are repetitive like all the others but in CO they can be a test of your build. Like the guy said, it is wide open and possible to choose any power without having to belong to particular class. On the other hand you do have to think which is nice for an mmo. Instead of picking a class knowing your getting the same thing everyone else with same class, you plan ahead, experiment with powers and buffs vs your stats. You level and go to the powerhouse where you can then use one of their many test rooms, from simulated lazer attacks, obstacle course for different travel powers, test dummies and then a simulated AI battle field choosing difficulty and 1 - 5 teams. Some say they solo 5 teams on hardest level and yes its possible with the right builds. You can test drive and change powers without penalty as long as you do not leave the power house. I have spent days in there figuring out the best possible build while keeping within a theme using the most visually impressive effects all at the same time. At the point of developing virtual agouraphopia, then, another mission is suddenly more exiting after a boost of power and/or visual effects. Bottom line, for me this is an Arcade mmo. They added more since print, free expansion 2 months away.

Honestly, I was kinda hoping this game would be good. My good friend plays it so I started playing it but after awhile I simply can't play it anymore. There is literally nothing that's keeping me going. Like he said, it can be fun for the first month... after that.... Well, it's just plain boring. It can also be hard to find a character you like.. While there's a lot of choices it still might not make you happy. I've dumped all my skills and got new ones countless times and I still haven't found anything that I even remotely like, I just find ones that are more or less powerful. That's a great thing about Champions though, if you don't like your characters skills... Go to the powerhouse, unlearn them, and learn new ones. It can cost a lot but if you have the resources (In game currency) then you can do it as many times as you like.

I played blood moon and I didn't see any of the problems these guys are talking about. I think the gaming community gave up on champions, there are no new reviews and the game doesn't even look the same. It's time credit was given where credit is due.

well after watching this review i'm not sure i would enjoy it as much. he makes it sound like there is nothing to look for in the game. i'm also getting DC universe online, after seeing this review i feel like that will get the same review. I dont care i'll see both games for my self

did this game come out for 360?

they should update this review. Everything he's complaining about is changed. For instance they've added a ton more missions so that there isn't a gap.

Anyone thinking of buying this should avoid Steam & go to Play.com where it's £17.99 compared to Steam's £29.99

first up i would like to apologize to kevin... i had not read the written review, and i am sorry... It does explain the game pretty well and it is well written. This may sound a bit pretentious but I also apologize for the insult which was not aimed at you personally since it was just my reaction to the energy of the video... Once again I apologize.

@heysharpshooter There is a fee for the 360 version fyi

Obviously it may be low on content now, but that's what patches are for, right? Just give it some time to develop; this game is only a baby.

Paul_GameFury

Hopefully there is more content in the works. Maybe Gamespot could revisit the game in about 6 months. That's usually how long it take for a new MMO to really establish itself (or crash and burn). It looks really interesting, but sounds like it needs some work.

Anyone here looking forward to Cryptic's future release of Star Trek Online which should be released in 2010? I know I am, or was, until I saw this review. I just don't know anymore. Some negative commentary of aspects of the Champions Online review might be true, and others baseless. All I know is that I have been using Gamespot's review system to choose my games for several years now, and 9 times out of 10, a favorable Gamespot review will lead to me buying a game that I am happy with. When I mean favorable I am talking about an 8.0 or higher. I don't really mess around with games that are lower than an 8.0(who knows, I might be missing out). Anyways, based on this logic for my selection of games based on Gamespot reviews, I really freaking hope that Star Trek Online gets above an 8.0. The way I have standardized how I buy games might sound narrowminded, but it is what I am comfortable with and I have been quite satisfied with my system so far. Are there any like-minded individuals here who heavily rely on these reviews that, like me, are also concerned about Cryptic's ability to potentially screw up the playability of the future Star Trek Online?

I remember when WoW launched and there were many days where I couldn't log on my server for days at a time and my content consisted of questing and running MC and BWL for inane amount of hours. All MMO's that launch seem to be unprepared, buggy, and that should be expected. Take it for what it's worth. I actually truly enjoy the game and I hope to follow it as it grows into something bigger and better. I'm tired of WoW and the constant grind of dailies and badges. Cataclysm doesn't spark my interest. Here's hoping for Champions Online. I'm looking forward Star Wars Old Republic and Final Fantasy XIIII.

Bought and played for 2 days. Haven't played it since. 49? down the drain. My own fault though as I bought it on an impulse on Steam.

Overall good review but I wish some talk would have been done on creating your arch enemy and how big of a roll that plays since that's been a major selling feature for Champions ads.

I'll say 1 thing and 1 thing only...If you do not play this game with an Xbox 360 controller, then you are NOT getting the full experience the devs intended.
