We talk to Bill Roper, executive producer of Champions Online, about the upcoming superhero MMOG.
@earlthecannibal That's what has me worried as well. Seriously if this tanks that will hurt the overall MMO scene (competition is always a good thing) and have us wondering how much help or hurt a lead dev can do...
I am more interested in their next game, Star Trek Online. Not that I am not at all interested in this one just that I have to set priorities. ;)
Well I can't say that I am playing the game now *cough cough* but this game is freakin awesome. The graphics rock, the combat is fun and has new elements. PvP is fun, nemisis system is cool. It's CoX on steroids.
Champions will be awesome, especially without the baggage of major superhero stars. If it's even as good as City of Heroes/Villains than it's perfect.
Game will fail because they are only allowing 200 people in each area so if you want to group with friends it will be very hard like in Age of Crap Conan
Didn't Hellgate London sound good when he explained it a couple of years ago?...I'm waiting on the review for this one.
I can't wait. I've been looking for a different MMO lately (previously played WAR and WOW and didn't enjoy either too much). This looks like it could be the next big super hero MMO, not saying DC won't be big, but I've heard more about Champions and to me it looks better. Day 1 buy for me for sure.
I'm on the beta but I can never seem to find a time when the servers are up! I'm not much of an MMO fan but this one seems like a good laugh so I'll certainly be watching with interest.
cant wait for this. Yes it looks childish but superhero's! Who can say no to creating an awesome superhero of your own and saving the world or bringing it to destruction. And its an MMO. I think it will be like city of heroes mixed with world of warcraft. If its as I expect I will be very happy and on it all summer.
It was funny to hear him explain why not having famous characters is actually a *good* thing. Ha-ha, ok-- whatever-- nice sales pitch. Personally, I don't think it's *good* to not have famous characters in the world, but I don't think it's bad, either. I thought the famous characters in Star Wars Galaxies added absolutely nothing. I mean, these games are about your own character-- not the licensed ones. Besides, always disappointing to meet famous characters in MMOs. You go into Conan's throne room or Vader's base, and they're just another silent mannequin standing in one place day and night. Snooze.
Hahahha! Its not cool to have mish with Superman?? LOL! It was a desesperate attempt to attack DC Online!
Great gameplay video here. I'd probably take Bill Roper a lot more seriously if he had been involved in the project for longer than a quarter of its total development time. That said, the dude is an experienced developer, one of the great minds behind hits such as Diablo, so I can't complain about his presence there.
