Review 3: Centipede, Arcade/ Atari Collection

Centipede is another quarter operated arcade game by Atari. It was somewhat like space invaders, except the objects you have to avoid come from the top of the screen, instead of jus anywhere. You can also move your ship.

Centipede is the first game I know of to have 2 player alternative play (it did in the collection edition, but I am unsure if the original arcade port had that). Now, about the game play. You are a ship (exterminator, perhaps?) At the bottom of the screen. You are free to move up, down, left, and right. You can move anywhere in the lowest third of the screen. The bugs can move anywhere (however, unlike asteroids, they cannot move off-screen.) Each level starts with a long centipede moving toward you, bouncing off walls and fungi. The centipede is made up of numerous different "spores". Each time you shoot a spore, it turns into a mushroom, often splitting the centipede into two centipedes. Once every spore is gone, you win the level, and the next level comes soon after.

As you go on the levels get harder. At any time, a spider can come out of the sides of a screen, and if it touches you, it kills you. If you are touched by a centipede or spore, you will also die. Mushrooms are harmless, and can be destroyed by being fired at. You get 3 lives per quarter, and an extra life every 12000 points. Overall, centipede is ok, but you are better off playing millipede, because the spores can't harm you in that. Thanks for reading!
