Cave Story 3D is the 3D remake of a great game we all know and love, and it sure does it justice!

I never played the original Cave Story for PC or anything, but when I went to EB Games to get The Last Story, sadly they didn't have have it so I ended up buying this, and I am actually grateful that I was able to get this instead. I didn't know much about the series, but a forum I tend to live on highly praises this game, and I understand why.

Cave Story's plot is cleverly and superbly written, you start off as Quote, a male character to awakens in a cave with no memory as to how he got there. He comes upon a villages of Mimigas, who are being persecuted by the Doctor. The Doctor's servants are searching for Sue, a girl who has been transformed into a Mimiga. They mistake Sue for a Mimiga known as Toroko, and the chase is on. The player will have to play through several sections, and the story gets deeper than you'd expect it to, and has a great ending (Even for just the first ending, not the better ending).

I had more fun with the game play than I thought I would at first. It's like a platformer, but it's also a shooter. You can jump, and you get several weapons throughout the game all which can be levelled up and levelled down if you take enough hits, and you can get a booster pack which makes some parts a lot easier. Challenging and addicting is all there is to it.

If you're looking for top quality graphics for the 3DS, you won't find it here. Instead, it's got a nice cartoonish look to it, but it's really the 3D effects that help with it. The first version of the game was 8 bit, so you can't really complain, Cave Story was meant to look cartoonish, and not so much realistic. Still looks great, and has some good 3D effects although both of them aren't pushing anything.

There are some great tunes throughout the game. The Sand Zone being probably my favourite. Each theme perfectly represents which area you're in and can also get you pumped up for what's to come next. Great soundtrack as well!

Although not the longest game, it still will take you a good 5-10 hours depending on how you play and if you do the whole game or get the average ending which I mentioned before.

I could see myself replaying it whenever I need a nice, short handheld game to play. It really has a nice feel to it that a lot of other games don't have which make it easier to come back to, plus there is a part in the game that you can choose between getting an item which chooses between you getting the average ending or the best ending which helps with the replay value.

Overall, a terrific game that truly is better than what you ever thought it would have been capable of being. It will honestly amaze you once you beat it, and gives you one heck of a challenge! One of the best 3DS games out there.
