Punishingly hard but oh so worth it.

User Rating: 9.5 | Catherine PS3
When you begin the game of Catherine, it's very clear that you're getting into some uncharted waters for both the PS3 and potentially yourself as well. What starts out as a random dude hanging in a bar with his friends quickly escalates into a fight for your life adulterous romp. Stop me if you've heard that before because if so then this'll be old hat for you. The best part of this game for me is the familiar types of banter and ridiculous conversations had that were present in the Persona games as well; though in a much more adult context of course.

The other half of the game is an insanely difficult puzzle oriented Jenga-esque gauntlet that will have you frothing at the mouth after say 10 tries in a row. Best to walk away from it a bit, gather some mental stamina and get back into it later. The more you continue to try and try after 20 times the more futile your efforts until you'll possibly end up with a busted controller from smashing it off of the wall or just stomping on it as you think about Katherines' face.

The game is funny, difficult and if you crank the difficulty up it can take you quite a while to complete. What makes it better than other games is it's just plain unique in both storyline (hardly has adultery been presented in a game as the main focal point and end goal) and sense of achievement after finally scaling a mountain like puzzle with seemingly no end in sight.

9/10.
