well, im tempted to try playing as richter once i defeat dracula, im just outside of the final room, my map percentage being at 200.4%, so far, i've met the conditions for the best ending.
i just have to know, though... what is it like playing as him?
can richter equip all the gear and items that alucard could, or is he stuck with nothing but his whip?
also, how can you get around the castle with him... i recall several moments where i needed the wolf, bat, and mist forms to uncover the maps 100% and to get certain items.
can richter gain experience and level up, too?
oh, and one final question... i saw someone in another topic mention playing as maria... how the hell do you do that? and if you really can play as her, what is the game like with her?

Playing as Richter is like oldschool Castlevania. You can't equip anything and all he can use is the Vampire Killer, alongside his other skills (Uppercut, Blade Rush, Slide and whip rotation; he already knows the moves). Of course, he can get subweapons, and all of them have special Item Crashes that cost lots of hearts. Triangle button activates the Item Crash.
There's a "empty" subweapon which you only have at the beginning, until you get your first subweapon - its item crash gives Richter fire powers but it doesn't work so just get a real subweapon.
Richter can't level up and has of course no Inventory system. You can find Life Max Up and Heart Max Up though and they're a necessity if you want to survive and if you're not good at dodging attacks. Most of the early bosses are easily defeated by HYDRO STORM (Holy Water item crash). When you are in the Inverted Castle, Richter becomes overall stronger, but the buffs aren't ported to the normal castle. Hardest part with Richter is Galamoth, though the normal enemies may surprise you too.
Richter can't enter every room of the castle: anything where the mist is required, the wolf-bat secret in the Merman area and a few more. Richter's Uppercut can send him in the air everywhere just like Alucard's Super Jump, so you can already reach certain spots before Alucard could ever do in its own game.
Some of the bosses do not appear, there's no dialogue and no story, librarian turns his back on you and some story zones are set to be more easily accessible for Richter.
Maria is only available in the PSP version of SOTN (into Dracula X Chronicles), or in the Saturn version of the game... if you ever have that piece of crap of a port.

It's MUCH harder than the Alucard quest. I can't defeat Galamoth, but I have managed to explore all the other areas (and defeat the other bosses).

Richter's offensive capabilities are generally much better than Alucard's (excluding all the overpowered stuff like the Crissaegrim or Shield Rod), but he also dies much more easily. In that way it's like old school games that are less forgiving of mistakes.

He's more powerful damage-wise only in the first quarter of the game. After that he's nothing compared to even a non-broken Alucard.

sounds like a real pain in the ass... this was my first real castlevania game, so im not sure i'd be able to do a richter playthrough, after hearing all this.
hell, i barely survived against galamoth with alucard using crissaegrim, the alucard gear, and being over level 60 and having over 1,000hp!
galamoth surprised me, he did so much damage so quickly, and it took so much damage to kill him... i couldnt believe how much harder he was compared to all the other bosses.
so there is no way i'd be able to win with richter.
speaking of dracula X chronicles, or whatever... i read about that, and i saw that alucard was voiced by yuri lowenthal in the SotN compiled with that.
is that true? ...wish i could've played that version, would've been interesting.
...oh, and the sega saturn version, i saw on that "castlevania crypt" site that it has extra sections in the castle, more enemies, and crap like that... why did sega get so much more?
that irritated me.

The PSP version has new voice acting (which... I never cared of. Can't play SOTN without the old legendary dialogues).
The Saturn new content is really poor so you don't miss much.

If you want to end Galamoth, two 1000 Blades (knife crash) to his head should end him. You can also just whip repeatedly at his head until he dies.

at the moment, I can't remember where the blades are, and how you pull off the move

Seriously Zero, if you get the Beryl Circlet, Galamoth is a complete joke. His lightning attacks will literally heal you to full hp every time.
On Topic:
Richter is not that hard to complete the game as, the Life Max Ups actually do increase his overall HP, as you'll notice once you get a few of them. His whip does double damage in the inverted castle, though his overall DPS is MUCH lower than Alucard. If you wanna be really cheap, just use the Holy Water and item crash every single boss, it works. The lack of the bat form is a pain sometimes, but it's not too bad once you get the hang of the boost jump.

I couldn't holy water/item crash Galamoth to death though. I used it up and he was still alive and killing me!

Use the uppercut and get over on the platform behind his head and knife crash him in the face. IIRC he dies in two.

The extra stuff in the saturn weren't that great
On a side note regarding the voices
Yuri Lowenthal was a crap choice for Alucard. He sounds too young, too girly and not firm at all. He may be the girliest LOOKING character, but he should sound badass because he is a badass.
In Harmony of Despair, the only line he delivered well was Hellfire (though there's nothing to compare it to since he didn't say it in this game). Dark Metamorphosis sounds so matter of factly, just ugh
It's funny too, everyone else's voice in that game was great (well, except Shanoa. Sounds too much like a man)

Yuri is a good VA but I don't think he's a good fit for Alucard. The bland, emotionless PSX VA was better simply because it reflected Alucard's personality - cold, detached-type of thing.

Yeah, I don't hate Yuri despite that. I hope Yuri plays Megaman X if they ever get another game.

I think Galamoth is the only boss that can survive the Hydro Storm treatment, so you should use the strategy Zhuge mentioned.

"Use the uppercut and get over on the platform behind his head and knife crash him in the face. IIRC he dies in two."
I'm going by memory here, but... you *do* have to actually search for the knife crash item right? It's not just given to you? You can't just activate the knives whenever you want by doing a little Street Fighter-like combination of buttons?
I'm having trouble remembering Richter's game since I spent most of my time with Alucard's quest. Now, another thing. I believe I do recall using knives on Galamoth and... either the amount of damage wasn't enough to wipe the floor with his ass, or perhaps the amount of hearts was a problem. I'm so confused!!!!!

It's like a tingling feeling that you've never felt before. It'll end fast the first time and there will be blood and some pain, but it feels so good.
Yes, I am talking about playing as Richter.

Actually, you can activate the knife crash whenever you want... Just like Hydro Storm is the Holy Water Item Crash, so too is Thousand Blades the Item Crash for the Knife. Just pick up a knife subweapon and hit triangle.
