Call of Duty: Modern Warfare REVIEW - Lock and Load

User Rating: 8 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare XONE

Call of Duty as a series has seriously been on the decline, ever since modern warfare 3 was released, the series has seriously lost it's originality and arguably even it's spotlight. After releasing so many futuristic shooters, the series went back to it's roots in 2017 with the release of Call of Duty: WW2. A pretty good game for what it was and seemed to steer the series into the correct direction again. In 2018, Trey arch released Black ops 4, which takes place in the future, but didn't have any advanced movement mechanics to it. This brings us to 2019 with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This game I still play to this day, (which is surprising giving the fact that it's no longer the newest cod). There are so many tiny details and quality of life improvements to it that it honestly doesn't feel like a Call of Duty game. Starting off with it's story. As you may have heard, it's a pretty generic United States vs some other country story. But it's in the levels and level design where the game really shines. Honestly, most of them do feel like open firefights but a select few really do make the game worth playing. Levels like "Clean house," where you and a squad break into a house in the dead of night; clearing out enemies in the process. To "Highway of Death," which tasks you to shoot far off enemies with a sniper rifle, while also accounting for wind speeds and bullet velocity. These levels really give the campaign some variety which in turn really makes it worth playing. Quick note, the graphics. They're crazy, maybe even better than 2020's Black Ops Cold War, (which I also have a review up for). Multiplayer finally throws out the pick 10 system that Treyarch introduced with a more simple "5 attachments per gun," which is a more than welcome change. Other than that, it's really standard call of duty multiplayer. There is a new sprint called tactical sprint where your character throws his gun in the air and runs as fast as possible, which is cool. But one major problem I have with the game is the mount feature. You can now mount your gun to any wall or window and it greatly reduces recoil which in turn, gives a bigger reason to camp. It's either campers, or people running around with smgs or the As-val, the newest assault rifle. It's so annoying when you get into games with such sweaty players that it honestly makes the game so awful. The map selection is pretty good, with the exception of Piccadilly and Euphrates bridge, two 10v10 maps that are way too big. Also, one small issue I have is that you cannot have party chat only. The only way you can do voice chat is by using the game chat, so If you wanted to talk to only one person, then you can forget it because the entire lobby will hear you. The third and final mode, spec ops, is laughably terrible. It is so bad that it's genuinely worse than Call of Duty: Ghosts. Also, Spec ops is so hard, that I've hear people say it's harder than world at war on veteran difficulty. Now THAT is hard. Overall, it's still better than Cold War and the campaign and multiplayer are great fun. So as long as you can fit the 200+ gigabyte install, it's definitely a game worth picking up. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare receives an 8/10.
