User Rating: 8.5 | Cabela's GrandSlam Hunting: 2004 Trophies PC
The Good: Good graphics, good animal AI, vast regions, realistic natural environments, plenty of game and none game animals, good sound effects, good weather effects, plenty of gear, challenging gameplay.

The Bad: Cheesy water effects, edgy looking characters and vehicles, dodgy and unsmooth vehicle controls, no support of higher resolution, no multiplayer mode. __________________________________________________________

Cabela’s GrandSlam Hunting 2004 Trophies is in many ways the best hunting game Cabela’s has released. Following up on the Big Game Hunter series might have been a bad move for the company then when you compare this game with the all new Big Game Hunter 10 – Anniversary Edition you can clearly see that development has been slow in the Big Game Hunter series, and the games aren’t better than games 3 years older in the same series. Immediately as you start GrandSlam 2004 you know things are going to be different, the intro is real footage and menu is more serious in approach to other Cabela’s games. A quite stellar soundtrack is more appropriate than the heavy rock gig that’s playing in the background of every Big Game Hunter game in the last 4 years. What makes this game so much better than the others is the vast amount of animals populating the forests and landscapes. You have 32 game animals plus some “minor” 20 other animals you can kill, and the options menu gives you the choice to eliminate rare animals as well! What a treat I tell you, finally walking out I see an eagle flying around, and landing on a tree. I get closer aim and fire, and pop it falls down on the ground for me to collect. The animal AI is more accurate and you can really immerse yourself in the hunt. Shivering surroundings add up to the complex and realistic feeling, very good draw distance enables for even more realism compared to the poor one in Trophy Hunter 2003, which by the way in from an entirely different company. The goal in this game is to hunt down all 32 game animals in 8 different regions to become a master hunter and join the inner world safari club bla bla bla… this doesn’t matter what matters is the content and gameplay, and this game delivers it. Apart from the goal, you have two modes a quick hunt, and a career hunt. I don’t think these will have to be explained. The only thing that bothers me when playing this game is the fact that some characters and vehicles look very edgy, the same bad vibe comes into action when you steer the vehicles I mean it literally forces you to go forward right or left, there are no smooth movements involved. The water effects also look cheap! Which is a big shame, because everything else in the outdoor looks good? The game can only be optimized to run on 1024x768 which is not bad, nor optimal; but when in the main menu the resolution can’t be changed so you are stuck with 640x400 in resolution in the main menu? Other than that Cabela’s GrandSlam Hunting 2004 Trophies is an excellent hunting game.
