Project Natal Hands-On Impressions

Laura Parker
By Laura Parker, Associate Editor

We had a chance to check out three demos using Microsoft's controller-free technology.

When Microsoft first revealed Project Natal at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the publisher called it a "revolutionary new way to play." Just how revolutionary this technology is remains to be seen, but what we do know is that both publishers and developers are already expressing enthusiasm for Natal and its capabilities. We had a chance to try it out for ourselves in a behind-closed-doors hands-on session at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

The creative director on Project Natal, Kudo Tsunoda, began the session with the Ricochet demo first previewed during E3 this year--a simple 3D block-breaking game where you use your whole body to knock balls at a wall. The Natal camera had no problem picking up Tsunoda's body movement accurately as he moved, including smaller movements he made with his fingers. Tsunoda explained that Natal works by reading the body entirely and then creating a "skeleton" that it uses to follow the body's movements. This is why the camera will not be interrupted by movement offscreen or interruptions like someone walking past in the background (which effectively means you can still play in a room full of people).

Following Tsunoda's demo we had a chance to jump in and try Ricochet out for ourselves. The camera took a little time to read our body, and surprisingly it worked out we were female--the onscreen avatar adjusted itself to our height, while the hair changed appropriately. However, the camera incorrectly judged the position of our legs--it had us sitting cross-legged instead of standing up like we were. It took about a minute before it readjusted itself.

Playing the game was difficult at first, partly due to the fact that we knew we looked somewhat crazy flailing and waving our arms about trying to hit the oncoming balls. After a few minutes it became easier, but we still found it hard to integrate ourselves with the virtual space. We could see the balls coming, but because we had no controller in our hands, the first reaction was to reach out to the screen and try to hit the balls at the same angle they were coming from. We soon discovered this wasn't necessary--just doing the hitting motion in the same general direction as the balls would have sufficed. The movements also had to be quick and relatively varied, requiring the use of hands, feet, and the torso to stop the balls getting through.

The next demo Tsunoda showed off was EA's Burnout Paradise. When first booted up, the demo did not actually work--Tsunoda stood there waving at the screen with no response, and the demo had to be restarted. Once we got our hands on it, it proved enjoyable and a lot easier to play than Ricochet. We stood in front of the Natal camera and placed our right foot forward to accelerate and back to brake. To drive the onscreen car we simply mimicked real-life steering. The steering motions can be as small or as wide as is comfortable--you can hold your hands very close together or very wide apart, and it will make no difference. Driving around the streets of Paradise City at a very high speed using no controller became very natural after a few minutes, even though it was a completely new experience. We found it easier to get back on the road after crashing than it would have been using a controller, which made this demo the most intuitive of the three shown.

The final demo we were shown was a fusion of Project Natal and Beautiful Katamari, a demo Tsunoda and his team prepared specifically for this year's Tokyo Game Show to celebrate Japanese developers. The demo was incredibly fun to play--we stood in front of the camera and used a down-facing cupping motion with our hands to control the katamari. By tilting our hands to the left and right we were able to navigate around the town, picking up as much junk as we could to slowly grow our katamari. A fast push gave the katamari a quick burst of speed, and more exaggerated tilting of the hands made it swing even further to the left and right.

While we had a lot of fun playing Beautiful Katamari with Natal, we must point out that holding up our hands for longer than five minutes proved somewhat difficult, and as soon as we lowered them slightly, we found the onscreen movements slightly off.

i just thought about it what if your playing a fighting game and you get hit then your character must have a reaction but u just keep hitting so your just gonna be hitting stuff for nothing

Behold, the death of a system. When you resort to gimmicks for sales *coughWiicough* you ruin the essence of gaming itself. Maybe, I don't know, SOMEONE out there likes the classic controls of yesteryear? It won't be as amazing as it was in the original showcasing of it, I promise you that. It's disappointing; now all we're gonna get gamewise are party games.

gears of was rapeing to a new level lol

Only good game is Beautiful Katamari. I would like to roll with my hands, but there's nothing I want for the system...

As nice as this thing looks, and as much as I'm looking forward to trying it out, are people honestly listening to themselves whenever they talk about it? "First person shooters are going to be a blast!" What? How in the world are you going to play... almost any modern game with this thing? Ever wonder why almost all the games on the Wii are identical? The idea of live motion in front of a camera means two types of "innovation". One, you actually need to create a completely new kind of game. Strangely enough, all these "new games" are remarkably similar. Or Two, just replace random button smashing with random arm flailing. It's not very innovating until someone actually creates something innovating for it. Otherwise it's just another Eye Toy, destined for failure. Don't get me wrong, I want to see this thing succeed, I really do... but think about it. Can it really? Are our mainstream game developers going to get past their jaded attitudes toward gaming, and actually create some innovative games? I think our only two hopes of getting good games for this thing, lie either with Valve (for learning how to produce true innovation on already existing, stale genres such as FPS), or the entire Indie game developer scene, because they'll be more willing to sit down and experiment with new innovative ideas without being concerned about losing hundreds of thousands of dollars, should the idea go belly up.

200-250 i wont buy it...150-200 ill buy it...

It opens up a whole new way of playing games.Like the wii did but with more accuracy and more connection with the game.It will do the same thing the wii does but way better andf know stupid wand in your hand and all great xbox franchies you cant play anywhere eles. And the graphics will be sick on the screen i feel like it is the start of bluring the line between playing a game and expiriencing them!

DiscipleGD 5 pts

Well said goldylocks! There just haters! Natal is truly revalutionary. It really is a big step foreward. It wont be perfect before launc and its not really fair fo gs to review it like that when its not complete yet.Think how good the games will be after the first generation?Concept is way more improved then ps3 wand or wiis crappy stick........

ibrahimau 5 pts

I guess the cost going to be not less than A$400 :(

Pokemon18986 5 pts

Natal looks awesome. FPS game would be a blast!!!!!!

DuncanM908 5 pts

it seems like it might have some cool effects on some already popular game series...the only thing worrying me is the price

Goldylocks33 5 pts

I'm really getting annoyed with the nay saying. Honestly, if you don't want it, fine. But to compare this project to the abilities of a wii is mindless. The entire concept of Natal is to take the controller out of gaming. For some who are too lazy to stand up out of their permanently sunken in couch cushions this will be nothing more than a new ad for a weight loss system that makes them want to change the channel. But for those who don't mind getting a little more involved, the possibilities are endless. Sure, right now there are going to be bugs. But think about the capabilities of this once developers can properly implement their control schemes into real actions. When I can play my FPS by standing up and dodging behind corners and "pulling a trigger", and RPGs by swinging my plastic carnival sword through the air, count me in.

Iron_dawg 5 pts

wow this sounds awsum but my only complaint is that natal would make teabaging kinda awkward

elagricola 5 pts

@im-a-roustabout some one told me the jedi thing is in the works, but you missed the jedi pull mind control and the best of all force choke!!! (self explanatory!!)

elagricola 5 pts

@calum1984 I think you are totally right... I saw somewhere that there's a camera peripheral for PC that looks like a webcam and it allows you to replace mouse movement with actual movement from your head, like, looking left, right, leaning (not sure if peaking and ducking). But replacing the left analog stick with the camera just like this peripheral claims would be great fun and would leave a window for more game play options...

cloudy14 5 pts

I hate to say it but this is exactly why i got a 360 not a wii, while it could be fun like the wii it will be, i think, a novelty item.

Donkeybrains15 5 pts

i dont think i will be buying this for a long time. it will be very expensive and probably wont work as well as they say it will.

corb77 5 pts

It sounds like its still got some bugs but it still sounds better than the PS wond thing or the Wii controler

calum1984 5 pts

ppl seem to be missing 1 potential use for games that are out now prime example is for call of duty. Ive heard a lot of bit%$ing about how controllers are rubbish compared to mouse/ keyboard main reason is some of the functions you had with keyboard i.e the lean around corners feature in call of duty isnt in the console version because there isnt enough buttons on the game pad.To me natal could be used to bring that function back into fps games on the 360 E.G you want to lean around a corner you do it in real life whilst still using the gamepad for everything else

I wouldn't be buying it. Not my cup of tea. It would be interesting to see how games are played out though.

stubuz323 5 pts

hmm, If only the 360 had a similar wii romote, PN will be innovative, but we should not try and take games made for controllers and rework them for natal, completely new types of games need to be invented

im-a-roustabout 6 pts

Oh one more thing. For the people who are complaining about this, well then don't buy the friggin thing! Nobody's making you, but can't you nay-sayers see that the next step into the future of gaming is interactivity? Imagine "geeking" it up and playing as a true Jedi, wielding your light saber around (their could even be tutorials on how to sword fight better) and then holding out your hand to do a push with the force on some unsuspecting droids? How about bending down really low and jumping up a little bit to do a super jump with Spider-man and then web-slinging around the city! They could even do that in first person view mode where if you look down a little you can see your hands or something. Imagine a FPS where you just hold your gun or whip out your side arm for some quick accurate shots, then chucking a grenade to blow someone/thing up! This seems kinda like a cool way to interact with our favorite heroes even more now! And I'm sure that if done right a Jedi/Sith game done right would have Natals flying off shelves.

sparkypants 5 pts

I'm really not impressed, Right now it sounds like Microsoft's Eyetoy with a lot of kinks.

im-a-roustabout 6 pts

I just hope the games become a bit less gimmicky, seeking to only show off how the hardware works rather than trying their hardest to create a full blown title that will rock faces. Hopefully you can use project natal or have the option of using a controller as well. That movie "Gamer" would be a neat concept to make into a game now!

DaBlackSheep 5 pts

Finally a way to make RTS games work on consoles. Imagine selecting units with your hands, it would be like playing god... Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 on 360???

BlueChecker 5 pts

Not sure, eh. I can easily imagine getting tired arms from holding them out in front of me. Someone mentioned fighting games, which is fine for boxing etc. However, personally I am unable to do a flying roundhouse kick, so games like Tekken will probably have to remain on controllers (for me anyway!) But at least developers are willing to try new stuff. Eventually innovation will only lead to good, even if there are a few hiccups on the way.

sir00 5 pts

thanks for preview but the excitement is over for me i like more of a serious next generation games like assassin creed, burnout paradise, Gears and one thing is sure natal is basically for kid games and playing it on next generation games would be a lot harder for example ur hands will be paining after u assume steering in air

It's great but who wants to use a lot of energy for a game i want lay down to my couch and play a game after work :D

PwningMaster 5 pts

This will rock fighting games but lets see how they do FPS.

I don't know, I like this whole idea of active video games and being more as one with the game you are playing but... I really just want to chill and play with a controller my team mates and I on my cross country team go out and run at least 10 miles a day and do hard workouts on top of school work... all I really want to do is just sit there and flick my fingers around having fun chill'n before bed without trying to get even more energy out of me ha. But it is all cool. Just not for me.

This is going to be a great innovation for technology in general (Porvided they finalize this project). You all need to realize that not only has this been a work in progess for sometime, but that it is STILL a work in progress. I think this is one of those things that is just a completely new idea for people and not everyone can see the full picture as to where this technology could take us in the world of video games. And btw... everything they talk about in this article is BETA VERSION! It's not finalized! And if your attention can only be grabbed by a quick 3 minute video and you can't sit still enough to read a few pararaphs... then don't bother posting =)

KhargAtla 5 pts

This seems like it could have some great potential (provided they can get it to actually work properly) but I fear it will got the way of the Wiimote: we'll just a get a few great applications of it (Twilight Princess, Galaxy, The Conduit, Corruption) and a gaggle of uninspired cashins.

nailclipper 5 pts

they need to implement this into NHL using the ideas behind ricochet so that they can create an awesome goalie mode

thenephariouson 12 pts

I think Natal will make 'Racers' and 'RTS' games shine, however will be interested to see how they implement it into RPG/FPS genres. Lets just wait and see.

swestendorp 5 pts

The Xbox is not a family console. That's why the Natal project is going to fail. I didn't buy a Xbox to jump around in my room. If I wanted that I would have bought a Wii. Don't get me wrong, this technology is excellent: For the Wii360.
