Halo 3 then. I don't have an xbox360, but I played the SP campaign in coop with a friend this afternoon and well this is not a good sign that I actually finished this game in a afternoon no? Took us 5-6hours hours to finish the sp campaign. The game is definatly in the "game for your mum" category even on legendary. The campaign had it's up and down and I was actually surprised to see that halo 3 show little innovation from halo 1. The little theme song that come in big fight, the same monster with better ai and linear fight. This last aspect is surprising considering how big the map are for an xbox game. Atleast in cod4, the linearity never feel boring because you alway have something to watch/kill, while in halo 3 you run into the same midget over and over pretending yourself that you are having fun. The sp was crap as usual, but I dunno, the coop mode make things funnyer when you have a friend sitting near you making jokes.
The MP portion was a bit better, but then I have to point out the serious flaw of the live system. First, the matchmaking system is horrible. Second the game give a clear advantage to the host. Third, 10$ for a 4 maps pack= hahahaha, you have to watch publicity and pay 50$/years to only have an access to the service and they are too cheap to give you 4 maps for free!!! No wonder Valve refused to release the new tf2 update on the xbox360 because M$ was forcing them to ask money for it. But, I think the mp portion was probably living to it's hype. Sure it's not tf2, but it's still a nice distraction for a while and I found it better than cod 4mp (pc version).
The graphic are so ugly for a big budget game. Don't tell me that with the god-like budget they had they could not get better graphic. I have to say that the characters and the vehicule look beautiful, but the textures are horribles and everything else in the game is screaming for AA and I swear I could see better graphic back in 2004 on the pc. Even Guild wars show better looking landscape than halo 3. We tryed to force the 1080p resolution, but then the game was even more ugly. Big dissapointment here.
The sound are ok. A good portion of the music have been recycled from halo 1 from what I can hear and the theme song repeat so often in so many way that bungie probably ran out of idea and decided they should beat the horse to death like Nintendo. The new theme music is horrible when you compare it to halo 1 and the mp3 version of halo 2 that I listened. The dialogue are horrible, but I've heard worst in the past. The last thing that annoys me is that the loudness of voices are relative to how far the character is speaking. When they start talking during a battle, and they're about half way across the battlefield, you can't hear anything at all. I turned subtitles on, but they only work during the cutscenes (brillant!).
To conclude, this game is pretencious because it's totally lack of any intelligent innovation. The dev figured that their game will be like the second coming of Fred Flinstone and decided they should change nothing, except the graphic, and slap you in the face with a 60$ price tag.
6/10 and only because the mp is a saving grace.
