User Rating: 10 | Yamaneko Bubsy no Daibouken SNES
Bubsy: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind was a highly anticipated game back in the early to mid 1990's. It was reviewed in many gaming magazine of the time. It was released on the Super Nintendo and on the Genesis. It was developed by a company called Accolade. The game's release was delayed several times in the early 90's. When it finally came out, it seemed that most of the hype surrounding it was gone. How sad that is too because Bubsy is an excellent game.

Bubsy is a witty talking Bobcat who had all his yarn balls stolen by the Wollies. Bubsy goes on an adventure to get his beloved yarn balls back. Each level has a title that is a parody of a movie by a similar name. The game title it's self is also one. Bubsy has a witty comment for each of them. It holds the game together. Keeps you entertained.

The game is divided up into 16 levels, or chapters, as the game calls them, changing theme every 3 until the final level. The goal of the game is to get Bubsy through each level while collecting as many yarn balls as possible. The game really seems to borrow from that of Sega's flagship platformer Sonic the Hedgehog. I have heard it was supposed to be Nintendo's answer to Sonic's fast paced game, but since the game was released on both systems, I doubt it to be true. It is however strikingly similar to Sonic. The game is very fast paced, allowing you to scroll in all eight directions. You also collect yarn balls ala Sonic's rings. There are many enemies and the levels are huge. You have to doge everything from Cheese Wheels to space ships to killer gumball machines. One thing that makes the game not so fun is the cheap deaths. Even a fall from just a few feet will kill you and sometimes you get hit by the Wollies when you actually aren't close to them. Also, things just randomly pop out of nowhere from time to time and hit you. Even though it does feel like a Sonic rip-off, it was done very well. If anything has to rip off Sonic, I am glad it is Bubsy.

Being a very fast paced game, the graphics are awesome. While flying through the air, you can actually make out all the enemies and items that you see for a brief 10th of a second. The best part is that everything is in beautiful detail. This is where the SNES shines over the Genesis. In night time levels you actually have the feeling that it is dark while in day time levels you have the feeling of the sun. The Wollies have a multitude of costumes and designs. They are also well animated, as are all the other enemies in the game. I don't think this game could have been visually designed any better.

The sounds are awesome in this game. Everything from Bubsy's witty comments to the little sound affects that happen when you grab yarn balls. The music isn't as good but still holds it's own quite nicely. The desert stage has the best music by far. The music is solid and nice to listen to and doesn't get stuck in you head, which is always a plus when it comes to video game music. Not perfect but pretty darn close.

Bubsy is one awesome game. I highly recommend it. It is indeed a lot gem. It's such a shame that this game lost many people's interest in the long time it took to develop. You should pick this game up for the Genesis at least if not the SNES or both. Very good game.
