Bubsy 3D is unique and I love that

Bubsy 3D is a 1996 platforming game published by Accolade and developed by Eidetic.

We'll start with the beginning: the gameplay.

Bubsy have a very basic moveset: Walk, run, jump and glide.

Bubsy 3D uses tank controls, which can be bad, but not there, I really don't think they're that bad, and they at least work, though sometimes it can be too slow. Bubsy 3D also introduce new and creatives ideas like the fact that you can shoot the atoms, which make collectibles more useful. The level design if often open, ecouraging exploration, and with arrows to guide you.

The graphics are really colorful, which really works for the cartoonish setting Bubsy 3D has. The textures are high resolutions and some of them are really good for it's time. But since the textures are high resolutions, that means there's a lack of textures in the level. But I think that it make good use of that fact and manages to do a layout like a checker board, which works considering this is an alien planet, giving it a distinct look and the animations are surprisingly good for a team that didn't have any experience in 3D.

Back to the levels, there's a lot (6) types of levels. All of them have different mechanics which makes them even more memorable. There's also rocket pieces to collect if you want the good ending. Most of them are really rewarding to search, especially since you can immediatly collect them, by completing puzzles or just finding it somewhere, but there's some rockets that are just kind of stupid to find and some ennemies can be just annoying like the screenges (the slime thing).

Now I mentionned a lot a positive things about that game, but what about the negative ?

Like I mentionned, the level design is open, that should be great, right ? Not for some levels, like Woolieville Horror, which is just cryptic the first time you play it and there isn't really any clues of what you're supposed to do. The water levels are just at best boring and at worst annoying, the dogfish and ripplers are just here to be here as the just dash toward you and you're supposed to defend yourself quick enough, which 99% of the time just fails, and if you don't try to 100% it, the water levels are just boring and you don't do anything in them. And then there's the bosses. Yes, they're better than some bosses in games like SM64, but...they just don't really works. For example, in Woolie Bully, you're supposed to know that you can glide over the weird goo thing he throws at you, Mortal Bobkat just don't give hints on what you're supposed to do and the final boss is just awfully throwing laser at you, but they're still kinda fun (expect for the final boss).

Overall, I really recommand you to check out Bubsy 3D, it's far from flawless but it's still an enjoyable experience, with a ton a fun and nice ideas.
