That don't look like Bruce Lee...

1984... I was 15, my parents had just gotten our first home computer and I was spending hours trying to get different games that I had copied from friends onto 5 1/4 floppy disks to run on our new Commodore 64.

Most of the time I didn't even know what games I was copying. I would just try to get them to load, see if they ran, and what the game was like. Through this route I stumbled onto the little game that could - Bruce Lee - and it became my favorite game of my youth.

The idea was simple enough. You were given one screen at a time, no side-scrolling, and each screen was basically a maze. You had an number of environmental hazards to navigate through - fireballs, fire pits, conveyor belts, sharp spears on the ceilings, walls and floors, flying knives. The goal was to collect lanterns to open up the next section.

You had to move through the mazes avoiding damage, while fighting off black-clad ninja dudes and fat sumo wrestlers who were coming after you. The fighting was the best part. You're primary method of attack was a flying leg kick that would send your enemies sliding backwards. It sounds way too simple compared to the timed button presses of Ninja Gaiden, but hey, we're talking old-school here.

Bruce Lee was a well-designed game. The mazes were challenging and fun, as was the combat. I have alot of good memories from this one. One of these days I'll get the Commodore 64 down out of the attic and fire up Bruce Lee one more time.
