It's not everyday you have a group of soldiers to command in a first person shooter.

'Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway' is a game continuing the theme of World War 2, into the gaming industry. BIA: HH at first glance appears to be that of a standard World War 2 shooter however after the first level, you soon learn that the traditional game play of a shooter is quickly thrown aside. Although it is represented in many parts of the game, a newer 'duck for cover' and 'command' system has been created.

I find the game play in BIA: HH to be rather intriguing. Prior to playing this game I had not experienced the tactical side of the game or the usage of squads. The squad format is rather useful, particularly on easy modes as enemies can often be suppressed while you act like John Wayne and charge in and kill the poor suppressed Nazi's. However in the harder modes, this imagery is thrown out, and you are basically stripped off of all your HUD and other traditional necessities, including sadly the cross-air of the weapon. This therefore means you are forced to resort to very tactical manoeuvres, basically one squad suppresses and the rest of them go with you to flank the enemy. This basically turns your traditional run-around-kill-German shooter into something of a First Person strategy game. However to add to the variety of game play in this game, the developers appear to have decided "let's just throw in a tank to finish it off". The tank levels are often a delight if not frustrating on hardcore mode. The terrain becomes destructible, the explosions are spectacular, and then there is always that one bazooka soldier or sniper that hides and repeatedly shoots you to the point where your either hiding behind a corner recovering, or your dead and having to repeat the entire stage over again.
The sound in the game is rather standard if not boring. Weapons sound almost exactly the same as the other sides with no uniqueness to the game with the exception of the Thompson, M1 Garand, and the BAR weapons. The music in the game gives the feeling that the player is a member of the television series Band of Brothers, which the game is sort of a parody. Considering that the characters in the game are members of the 101 and Operation Market Garden was in fact featured in Band of Brothers.
The graphics is where the game really does deteriorate. Last I checked every single developer tries to make their game look as realistic as digitally possible. This game ironically is the opposite. It resorts to using traditional Medal of Honor appeal about it, and to be honest after I had finished single player mode, I had an urge to go and find my copy of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and play that. However there is one level that shows a rather interesting form of graphics, and that comes in the form of the level 'Hells Highway' in which the screen turns a slight permament red, not because you are injured, but because it is designed to show how the soldiers appear to be fighting through hell to hold their position, which I believed to be rather impressive.
The multiplayer… is non-existent. I spent probably 2 hours trying to find and online game, and regardless of the fact that my internet on a regular basis decides to rebel against its owner; I had no luck in finding a game. So if you're trying to do online achievements for this game, than either resort to the forums to grab a group together or look around other Xbox related sites.
All in all the game is not bad, I would recommend if you wanted something to do for a week, this game would be a good choice, however if you are wanting a game with good single player AND multiplayer experience, than I suggest you go play Call of Duty: WAW.
