What sort of challenge run is fun with this game? A starting equipment only run? A no equipment challenge seems like it might be rather hard, what with having to go around punching everything to death. Has anyone ever tried beating the game without using Hearts/Sources/Drops to permanently upgrade stats?

Sadly, I don't think anyone likes this game that much. I myself have a hard enough time with it using all the stat boosters and level grinding the fairy things to do any sort of challenge run.

I'm currently in the Ice Castle doing this run. I didn't even use the Light Jade for the ruins, and all my stats (health included) are what they were at the start of the game.
It's interesting in that you need to carry healing items all the time. Since you only have 6 HP, cheese is fine to carry the whole game, but the moment you take damage you pretty much need to heal. Thankfully, I've only run into enemies that do 3 bars of damage so far, nothing's been a one hit kill and I've not died to anything (except when I tried the arena), but it's certainly tough. Power and Defense Capsules (the ones that temporarily double the stat) don't seem to be of much use... The first boss was tough though, almost managed to wear me down even when I had plenty of healing items to boot.
Speaking of the arena, it seems pretty much impossible to clear without stat boosting items. You're forced to use crappy armor and a bad sword, and you appear to be a one hit kill basically. You can't even sit back and abuse shields the way you can in the normal game due to enemy AI in the arena being much more erratic.

I know what you mean about the arena. I was fighting one of the tall armored guys and when i had his HP down to about forty, I couldn't damage him anymore no matter what I did. He just sat there and blocked every single hit and finally killed me.
Me, I abused the fairies, I couldn't imagine going without them. I found out that the max level is 19 for all of them. With Sarah (the strength boosting fairy) on level 19 I think she raises your attack by at least as many points. The healing fairy on 19 will actually pre-empt your damage. So even if you block with your shield, he'll start healing while the enemy's in mid swing. I think if I went through the game once or twice more i could do a challenge run fairly easily.
You ever consider writing a guide for this game? I wish there were a more thorough one, but no one seems to share my love of this game.
