Amazing game...only let down by underdeveloped story and characters...

User Rating: 9.5 | Borderlands PC
I love this game. I absolutely love it, from the first moment I started playing it. I love all the guns, the loot, the graphics, atmosphere. Really I think this game got so many things right. So many small things that other games get wrong.

For instance, the machines you buy things from have 'special offers' which you can buy that are available only for a certain amount of time. An excellent little idea. The game is littered with little things like that which really make the whole looting and getting money and guns very enjoyable.

The vehicles aren't very interesting but they do the job and get you around. The bad guys are well designed. The creatures are well designed. The levels and areas are well designed.

This game has one problem that stops it from being a 10 and undoubtedly a legendary game.

Story/Dialogue/Characters.....

It is this games one flaw and it is such a shame. There is hardly any spoken dialogue or storyline or character immersement at all. Why they did this I don't know. You don't feel connected to any of the characters or even the plotline much. It starts ok with the voice talking to you and all the early interactions. That seems to drift away though and there is a very sparse and limited story involvement from then on.

There is an instinctual comparison with this game to Fallout 3 for me. They are different game types but there are a lot of similarities. This game does almost everything better than Fallout 3. However Fallout 3 had dialogue, characters and story. Even if they were a little wooden with the Oblivion engine...at least they were there.

People have spoken about the repetative nature of the missions in this game and the missions being unimaginative. Well I don't think this is strictly true, most games have repetative missions. The problem here is that there are no characters or story to carry the repetition as there is in other games.

If this game had more story and dialogue...oh what a game it would be. A absolute 10 and possibly one of the greatest games I've ever played.

Even without that, even with this rather major flaw it is still an awesome game. I highly recommend it.
