Limited Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game-LMORPG.. eh?

The tag-line for this game was correct indeed. The MMO(warcraft) and the Shooter(Halo) had a baby, and its not one of those ugly babies where you have to tell the parents its cute knowing the contrary. Borderlands is indeed a slick package. At times it feels like a multiplayer fallout 3, and people understand i am not comparing the two games. Its the desolate desert settings playing tricks on the eyes, a mirage of sorts. It's just you have vehicles and S&M wear, and who doesn't love toting guns with S&M wear? Beyond Thunder Dome anyone? In any case the comparisons will be drawn as you know Gearbox took inspirations from fallout 3. I will be the first to admit that the cell-shaded graphics are beautiful and suit the game perfectly. That is big praise considering i am one of the people that absolutely hate cell-shaded graphics. Especially in FPS's (I hated Thirteen).

Whoever decided to switch to cell-shaded mid production further delaying the release of this game deserves a raise. They were right. It would've put this game up as fallout 3 impersonator. Further diminishing the polish of the game. Borderlands doesn't take itself too seriously even though it should. It ops for more style than substance which isn't necessarily a bad thing if done correctly. It does a damn good job of setting itself up as like MMO mostl notably World Of Warcraft (same set up and grind fest like an mmo), instead of a more depressingly toned deep RPG like Bethesda's fallout 3.

There is a story here told through fetch-and kill quest which end up being repetitive after awhile but still manage to hold its fun factor due to the insane amount of guns you can find. Roasting someone's head with an incendiary sniper rifle seems more satisfying than your traditional head shot. Also for some reason the word "CRITICAL" flashing over your target's head before he dies from said sniper shot, in a flaming husk, is strangely satisfying.

The game does feel like a grind. New levels bring with them better stats but quickly the feeling of progression tapers off as tougher enemies present themselves. It has the same weaknesses as an MMO, said enemies being recolored and rescaled versions of the same old ones with new names and the moniker badass attached in front of its name to show difficulty. If the mob (creature) is more than 3 levels higher than you its virtually impossible to kill it, even if you head-shot it with a rocket-launcher.

Prepared to feel repetition, on a grand level but the sheer amount of guns you can find makes it worth it for some reason. You always feel like you should kill one more thing just to see what you can get. Even the Halo-esque shield you get can be upgraded through different shields the bosses drop. With an MMO flavor of course, you may get a shield that has high fire-resistance. Yeah...they went there. Even the grenades are upgradable through drops. You have talent trees, and you can respec and the typical fan-fare that truly isn't fun but works for the MMO-business model. The game kinda-pokes fun at the genre. There's even a pvp arena for you and your friends. I seriously don't know why this game works, gearbox might just be targeting old wow and halo players. If your familiar with both games you will enjoy this one.
