Game Review-Gameboy Color-Bomberman Max Red: Challenger/Blue: Champion
Review 39
Released: 2000
Game Genre: Action
Story
A typical Bomberman story, this time an evil guy named “Brain” has taken over a futuristic computer and is using it to control 4 other planets and Bomberman has to stop him. Now here’s the twist. Bomberman is competing with Max, his rival guy. In Bomberman Max Red: Challenger, you control Max. In Bomberman Max Blue: Champion, you control Bomberman. That’s the only difference in the two games.
Gameplay
Bomberman Max takes you back to the original Bomberman fighting style. A small square level filled with obstacles that can be blown up with bombs. When they’re blown up, items occasionally pop out that increase your firepower or the number of bombs you can throw. There’s a certain goal that you can reach in each level, such as releasing a captured friend or destroying a certain number of monsters. Once that goal is completed, the next level begins.
Graphics
Everything about this game is just OK. The graphics are fine, but Hudson definitely could have spent more time on them.
Improvements
Previous games: Pocket Bomberman Bomberman Quest
Like I said, this game returns Bomberman to where it should be: with the whole square level thing. That’s about the only improvement though. Nothing new or really big.
Durability
This game gets boring quick.
Sound: Very annoying, like most GBC games
Controls: Standard stuff:
D-Pad: Move
A: Place bomb
Difficulty: Hard
When you die, you return to the beginning of the level. Monsters are hard to trap, especially near the end.
Overall Score (4.4/10)
