Blue Dragon is a very generic RPG that fails to develop its characters or story.

Blue Dragon is an RPG that could have been great. Its developers have a pedigree that not many games can match, but this does not automatically make a great game.

One of the biggest problems I found in the game is the lack of difficulty. As long as the player takes a small amount of time to level outside of the main story, the party will absolutely dominate everything they come up against. Pretty much from the start of disc 2 I only needed to use the basic everyday attack (with double strike skill), even against the "more difficult" enemies like the Gold Mecha or King Poo. I would have liked to see a little bit more of a challenge.

Another pivotal mistake this game seems to make is the lack of story. I really never felt any emotion for the characters. They were so dry and during the times where they could have shown a little feeling they demonstrated some unrealistic emotions. The main story itself is pretty basic RPG fodder. Some dribble about magic, war, and machines; this theme has been touched on by numerous RPGs throughout the ages.

I am going to rant about one other issue as well. When I first started I thought I was really going to enjoy the interchangable skill/job system. However, by the end of the game I pretty much had the exact same skill/job set for every playable character. This again takes away from the character's individuality. With each job usually maxing the skills out at around level 40, it was really easy to have every skill for every character fairly early on in the game.
