A disappointment, even at a bargain price.

User Rating: 5.7 | Bloody Roar 3 PS2
I'm a huge 2-D fighting game fan who has stuck up for numerous titles from the genre that other critics hated. However, even I cannot justify the purchase, rental, or playing of Bloody Roar 3.
I bought this title in a bargain bin for $5. If it had in any way re-created an arcade 2-D fighting experience I'd have considered myself more than satisfied. Had this game been available in an arcade, there's no way I would've wasted $5 worth of quarters playing it.
The graphics aren't bad, but don't have anything that really sets them apart. Classic fighters like the Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Virtua Fighter series all have a certain look and feel that gives them an identity. Everything about Bloody Roar 3 just seems bland.
I prefer to use the analog stick in fighting games, but have no problem with Tekken and Virtua Fighter only offering the D-Pad control option. Tekken and Virtua Fighter use the D-Pad because it is much more suited to the highly advanced combo system. Bloody Roar 3 has no real combo system, and thus the fact that the controls are D-Pad based just seems cheap.
There is a story, which is told through numerous text selections over one simple character image. I actually liked this sort of presentation in Street Fighter II, but that was back in 1993. However, I really feel that developers should put much more into a game's story than they had to 13 years ago.
The game uses a lot of one button attacks and combos that can be very powerful. However, these attacks are unpredictable and often enemies are either much stronger or weaker than they should be.
Overall, this is a cheap 2-D knock-off of what could've been a good series. I only recommend this title for hardcore fans.
