Was Bioshock worth the wait?

User Rating: 7 | BioShock X360
Okay, I will be very honest here. I never was very impressed by what I saw of Bioshock. Yes it had pretty graphics and promised different, stand out gameplay, but I still wasn't hooked. Well, Bioshock was on my radar when I saw the great reviews start flowing in. I even went to work when it opened to rent my copy (our Blockbuster only got two). After getting home to play it, well read on to find out...

The graphics, without a doubt are one of the highlights, with excellent use of lighting to set the atmosphere. Fire actually looks like fire (sorry GRAW, you have been beaten) and the environments are creepy. Even the enemies look detailed, if somewhat repeated. Although a minor touch, when you stand under water that is pouring over your head, the water actually runs down your face. It's a neat touch that other games usually don't pull off. Even the guns are detailed, with variety added with each upgrade. Even the Big Daddies look very antagonizing, and believe me, they are. The only hitch in the graphics come when you hit an auto-save point, but is very quick. Think Halo, and you'll get the idea. Other than that, the graphics are great.

The sound in the game stands up to the graphics in every way, shape, and form. No matter where you are, you will always hear something going on in the background. Gunfire sounds like gunfire, and not like a muffled b.b. gun. The Big Daddy's scrapes, clangs, and grunts are enough to make the hair on the back of your head stand up. The little sister's beside them don't help settle the mood down any either. No matter what, the sound is great, and really help compliment the graphics.

The gameplay is where Bioshock........fails! Seriously the gameplay is average if nothing else. What were the reviewers smoking when they said this game has great gameplay!? Okay, here's what you do...think of Psi-Ops by Midway. Same powers; telekinesis, incendiary attacks, electrocution and so on all seems like it was ripped, or borrowed directly from that game. Truth be told, they did it better in Psi-Ops. All 2K games did is make the gameplay first person and set up different environments, a different story, and different enemies. If you haven't played Psi-Ops, you use weapons and mental powers to take down enemies. What Bioshock lets you do that Psi-Ops didn't is let you use is...wait for it....a wrench. That is the only melee weapon you get to use. Condemned this is not...definitely not.

All in all, if you want just another average shooter, go right ahead. The main difference between this game and and other countless games that was made is that it is a FPS that takes place under the Pacific Ocean.
