E3 '07: BioShock Updated Hands-On

We emerge from the depths in our hands-on look at this frighteningly great game.

The upcoming BioShock from 2K Games and developer Irrational Games is the ultimate "slash" game--as in horror-slash-sci-fi-slash-first-person-shooter game. Of course, the "slash" could also refer to the extreme amounts of damage you'll be inflicting on enemies as you move through this incredibly atmospheric and gorgeous game. During a 30-minute demo of the game during an E3 press appointment this morning, we got a quick overview of the myriad of ways you can take down enemies in the game, as well as a chance to play its opening level.

We've played the opening segment of the game in a previous look at the game, so our attention was firmly focused on the different ways of taking down enemies in the game. In the level shown off during the demo, you're tasked with restoring life to an underwater forest with a mysterious device known as the Lazarus Vector, which by that point in the game you will have created using the BioShock's invention system. Once the Vector is in place, you're tasked with defending the perimeter around the station from an invading horde of bad guys intent on messing you up.

Luckily you'll have plenty of methods for taking down foes. The first is proximity mines, which are handy in that you can set them wherever you like (on the floor, wall, or ceiling). When an enemy gets too close, boom goes the proximity grenade. The most basic use of the grenade is to set one on the floor and let it do its work. With a little creativity, however, the proximity can be much more interesting. You can attach it to a barrel, for example, then use your telekinesis to pick up the armed barrel and toss it at an opponent, effectively creating a superbomb. You can also use the proximity mine in conjunction with other accessories like the cyclone traps, which create miniature cyclones on the floor; when an enemy steps on it, he or she will be tossed to the ceiling, where your planted mines can be waiting for them to turn them into mincemeat.

A electrified trip wire crossed between two walls can electrocute baddies if they trip it, and you can use an enrage item that, when tossed at an enemy, will anger them to the point that they will attack the first thing that gets in their way, be it friend of foe. This tactic worked particularly well in the Lazarus level we saw demoed, when the main player was joined by the lumbering, hulking Big Daddy and his diminutive sidekick, the creepy Little Sister. Tossing an enrage item at Big Daddy caused him to toss grenades in every direction, blowing up any bad guys that happened to be in the wrong position at the wrong time.

The environment can also be a weapon when combined with your special, genetically enhanced abilities. Find a pool of water which your enemies are running through and you can immediately electrify the water and shock your opponents. A burning corpse can be lifted with your telekinetic powers and tossed at enemies. You'll also have the ability to freeze foes and smash them with hammers. And if you're not up for using an innate power, you can always dispatch them the old-fashioned way--with the various weapons the game, such as revolvers, shotguns, and more.

The game design behind BioShock should challenge your creativity and intelligence, leaving a relatively open-ended approach to uncovering the game's many mysteries, and dealing with the nasty consequences. We'll have more on the game in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

chaingun543, That's exactly my point. Is there anything truly innovative here? I guess I could say the same about any of the currently "hot" games that are due to be released... including Metroid Prime 3. Still, I think I will try out MP3 before this one. At least IT promises an innovative new control scheme.

@Omnichrono Interactivity / physics / presentation / destructability is basically the only areas in which an FPS can be further pushed at this point. This new batch of shooters (BioShock, Crysis) is going to take what Half-Life 2 did and take it farther in every way. Destructable environments with many different ways to blow stuff up, combined with a realistic physics system and open ended gameplay creates so much replay value for a singleplayer game. I still love playing HL2, even though it's very linear compared to BioShock and Crysis. There won't be any true Innovation in an FPS for a long time, because the only things I can think of are even more destructable environments (I mean the ground, walls, and everything--Crysis is almost there). And current machines simply can't blow the earth below you up...Red Faction 1 ftw :P

Sigh, yet another first-person shooter to satisfy the bloated masses. I can destroy stuff in 20 new ways! But hey, at least the graphics are prettier right?

Solid-CELL 5 pts

The demo was AMAZING! Bioshock has some of the best presentation i have EVER seen in any game.

Just played the xbox live demo and its every bit as cool as the all the demo videos looked . Masterpiece in my mind already. I am going to spend a lot of methodical quality time with this game .. i pre ordered months ago. I am a huge rpg and 1st person shooter fan and this seems to satisfy both those needs in one awe inspiring package!

Oh, wow. A first person shooter with really, really good graphics. Gee, who ever thought of that before? And multiple ways to kill enemies? Still my freaking beating heart.

Dr_Killmachine 5 pts

It's coming out soon, but I can barely stand to wait. This game is going to be amazing.

I wonder if there's like any element of exploration in the game, rather than a linear story line like in most shooters such as gears of war... But I think there will be some customization for weapons and abilities unlike gears which was just shooting and shooting and shooting, perhaps a little like God of War? Maybe an Oblivion + FPS? heh

littletotheleft 5 pts

im genuinely excited about this game. its been a while since a game has made me this way. nice.

The main feature of this game that reminds me of System Shock 2 is the sounds of the creatures & music. This will again immerse anyone who loves to play games that makes you jump. Don't expect this game to be easy either because you have to master the best weapons to use on the many enemies throughout the game. You'll only get a limited amount of atom to spend as well. Anyone whos seen the HD trailers will know friends & family will want to watch you play as its like a film; your not running around killing 100s of enemies or get the same repetitive sounds effects - you get cool visuals, wacky enemies with great AI plus its VERY open ended. Anyone know when the Limited Edition is due out please??

not long now till we show BIG DADDY who's the real boss round RAPTURE! its a thumbs up from me :)

I think the game is shaping up nicely, and also like how you can either be creative in killing people or straight forward. Also interesting is the menu screens, I like it when games try to be creative with them. Sure some turn out pretty crappy but at least they attempted to break from the cookie cutter designs.

darthzew 5 pts

Looks amazing. Even if it's not the greatest game ever, it'll be a nice holdover until Halo 3 comes out and then the Q4 storm begins....

Expo_Smacko 5 pts

Cant wait for this game. It is going to be amazing. Defiantly can not wait!!!

elishia666 5 pts

Nothing matched System Shock 2 excellence when it comes to gaming. Deus Ex was close, but.... Anxiously awaiting Bioshock, although I will miss Cyberpunk/SciFi setting.

Humorguy_basic 6 pts

It's a shooter not an RPG. They sold System Shock 2 as an RPG and look what happened to it in PC game sales! It will sell itself as everything of course, like most games do, so it will seel to the largest number of gamers in this struggling video gaming market we currently have!

mergirox 5 pts

Lets hope that you dont need a 400 dollar video card for this game Otherwise this game looks pretty good. Lets hope its as good as F.E.A.R was

Arch-Vil 5 pts

stuckboy if you really like crap , you will love this game.

x_kenney_x 5 pts

i dont know if i should get this game its either this and halo 3 and i am damn shure gettin halo 3. hopefully i can grab this later in the year.

AnnoyedDragon 5 pts

Jeez what is it with modern games and everything looking fuzzy? Enough for the bloom already, it makes all the textures look lower quality.

GlobalHazard 5 pts

Man, will they just release a demo or something right now! I can't stand looking at the pictures and videos anymore. I just want a taste!

stuckboy 5 pts

I hope crysis is "crappy" in the same way far cry was, because far cry was some pretty damn good crap.

soldado_nazi 5 pts

The preview kind of remind me Painkiller or the first Soldier of Fortune with its kinky ways of taking down mobs. It might definitivly be a top game. Hope the graphs can be lowered to play in middle class pcs :D regards

digi_dragon324 5 pts

sorry bro, Halo 3's gonna be game of the year just because of popular demand.

Arch-Vil 5 pts

I bet this game will be #1 game of the year 2007 . gamespot will probably give it 9.7/10 or more . Crysis will be crappy just like FarCry . Crytek will suck a big one this time .

amareen18 5 pts

i can't wait for this one i am %100 sure i will buy it and crysis

ChristysXmas 8 pts

Nice game but I'm sure there's not way to run it on my X800 XL. Have to give it up or give my card up

Cerrav 5 pts

Perhaps you meant, "awesome" ?

Krazy_Kore 5 pts

I'm probably gunna get this game not sure

GrimBee 5 pts

"Grimbee, why the hell would you want to implode a whole section of glass and submerge various parts of the city completely," Why not? Why would I want to play a game featured IN an underwater city? Why would I want to mix up drug experiments, inject into your arms and create weapons with it? Imploding yourself in an underwater city is something that hasn't been done before. It would be cool.

GoofyAce 5 pts

Couple things to clear up here, no demo announced, no cameos of anyone Bioshock is a sequel only in spirit, Bioshock is very different then Crysis in art direction but Crysis is more about showing off there engine then creating an inventive game. Make sure you visit the official Bioshock sites cultofrapture.com and bioshockgame.com . Eagerly awaiting August 21st with my fellow cultists. GoofyAce-Cult of Rapture.

jodamn 5 pts

This is the game I'm most excited for. Think SHODAN will have a cameo?

Jerian 6 pts

Likewise BringTheBlood, only Q is whether to get PC or 360? guessing PC will be 10$ cheaper so may do that

BringTheBlood 5 pts

Is anyone else more excited for this then they are Halo 3??? Cause i am! The game has got it going on! Theres really nothing like it out there that ive seen. Its new and thats what we all need right about now.

mattlom03 5 pts
